Bangor Daily News Wednesday February 13 1980 7 Money found from hijacking from the plane over southwest Washington during a PORTLAND Ore (UPI) Children digging in the sand on a family picnic uncovered up to $3000 of the $200000 extorted by DB Cooper in a 1971 jet hijack featuring getaway by parachute the FBI said Tuesday FBI officials said the discovery on a Columbia River beach north of Portland reinforced their long-held theory that Cooper was killed in the daring plunge that has made the aerial bandit a folk hero in the Pacific Northwest At news conferences in Washington Seattle and Portland the FBI confirmed the money not counted but estimated at $3000 or less was part of the $200000 in $20 bills given Cooper on demand after he commandeered a Northwest Orient Airlines 727 trijet on Thanksgiving eve 1971 Cooper boarded the jet in Portland threatened to blow it up then forced it to land in Seattle to collect the ransom He allowed 36 passengers aboard the flight to deplane then ordered the crew to fly to Reno When it landed in Reno there was no trace of Cooper but the rear exit door was open under the tail The FBI theorized at the time that Cooper dressed only a business suit and street shoes jumped bank when Brian pulled the wet and tattered bills out of the sand "Brian said 'Here's some more wood for the fire Daddy'" said Ingram "It wasn't wood He thought we struck it rich It looked like pieces of driftwood The couple took the money to the FBI The bills appeared to be in the same wrapping as when they were turned over to Cooper the night of the hijack the FBI said The bills were partly but the serial numbers could be made out and matched those on a list of the $20 bills given Cooper They were sent to the FBI laboratory in Washington for further study Himmelsbach who retires Feb 29 said he thought the money may have washed downstream from a Columbia tributary in Washington He said he is doubtful the money came from the Lewis River which flows out of Lake Merwin the spot the FBI had pinpointed as the mostly likely area for Cooper to have landed in his jump The Washougal River flows into the Columbia about 12 miles east of Vancouver and the Lewis Flows in about 25 miles north of Vancouver The Columbia makes a sharp northward bend at Vancouver ireezing ram ana nownng wina FBI agent Ralph Himmelsbach who has been on the Cooper case since the night of the skyjacking said the discovery of the money reduced to "less than 50-50" the odds that Cooper is alive The FBI said it was searching the area for more loot and clues as to the fate of Cooper "I thought it was play money" said Denise Ingram 5 Vancouver Wash in an interview with UPI following the FBI disclosure the money was from the Cooper hijacking She said she and her cousin Brian Ingram 8 "both found it It was buried in the sand I gave it to Brian so he could hand it to my aunt Pat" The child said she was on a family outing with her mother Crystal Ingram on a Sunday outing at a popular fishing sand bar for several Ingram relatives and their children The bills were partially buried in sand on the north bank of the Columbia River about five miles downstream from the Interstate Bridge connecting Portland and Vancouver Brian's father Harold Ingram told reporters the family was scooping out a spot for a fire on the river Peace Corps worker freed in Colombia WASHINGTON AP) A Peace Corps worker kidnapped in 1977 by Colombian guerrillas has been released and is on his way back to the United States the State Department confirmed Tuesday Columnist Jack Anderson aided the release by raising a $250000 ransom an associate said The release came almost three years to the day after Richard Starr a botanist was kidnapped on Feb 14 1977 Starr 31 of Edmonds Wash was seized in an attack in the Macarena region of eastern Colombia by guerrillas of the lef twing Armed Revolutionary Forces The State Department said Starr was one of a number of villagers seized and there was no information to show that he had been targeted by the guerrillas prior to the attack A Colombian radio station RCN said the guerrillas released Starr in Neiva 150 miles southwest of Bogota and efforts to contact him there had been unsuccessful Meanwhile Bob Sherman a staff reporter for Anderson said Starr was freed through negotiations conducted by US journalist Jack Mitchell who came to Colombia on the behalf of Anderson The State Department has not confirmed that It said only that Starr's family's efforts to secure his release had been hampered by the difficulty of communicating with the guerrillas Anderson could not be reached for comment but Sherman said Mitchell negotiated with the guerrillas and that he and Starr left Colombia for Panama sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning Sherman said Anderson became involved in the situation last summer when former Rep Lloyd Meeds of Washington talked with the syndicated columnist about the Stan-kidnapping Anderson ran a column saying he would serve as an independent mediator without government backing in an attempt to negotaite Starr's release Richard Starr COUPON SAVINGS!
