world championship of Grand Prix racing Championship Auto Racing Teams split away from the long-standing rule of the Auto Club in order to gain a real voice over such things as purses rules and scheduling That split now has become a relatively stable one with next year's schedule calling for CART to saction every champion an outlaw circuit that would be in direct competition with the world championship series run by the Federation International du Sport Automobile and its president Jean-Marie Balestre THAT WOULD give FOCA the right to set its own purses and rules At last weekend's Grand Prix in Watkins Glen NY the final event of this world championship Ecclestone was openly discussing the possibility of a breakaway from FISA Such an outlaw circuit would of neces ship car race except the USAC-sanctioned Indianapolis 500 and possibly the Pocono 500 It is expected that the CART teams will be invited to participate at Indy and meanwhile USAC reportedly is trying to put together a dirt track championship for the Indy car set Now it appears the bickering among the Formula One powers is about to burst into outright warfare The Formula One Constructors Association headed by Bemie Ecclestone of Brabham is attempting to put together sity have to run most of its races outside of Europe because of government regulations in many countries which specify that the events must ultimately be sanctioned by the world body of racing That means races likely would be scheduled in the United States Canada Mexico South America and possibly Britain Another problem is that such powerful teams as Ferrari Renault and Ligier are expected to stay with FISA because they either have powerful political connections with the Paris-based sanctioning body Motorsports Politics threat to veteran of 12 major league seasons who was New York regular first baseman through most of the 1960s was hired Tuesday by the Yankees as a minor league battiing instructor Pepitone also will assist in other phases of the game including defensiive play at tirst base and the outfield as well as baserunniing In the off-season he will work with the public relations office making appearances for the club Pepitone came up to the Yankees in 1962 and was their regular first baseman until 1970 when he was trdded to the Houston Astros He also played with the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves before
