Some of the rule's are mystifying and suggestive of the supernatural.

Why, for example, are Oklahoman only allowed to catch exactly 37 crappie? Why not an even number like 30, or 407 1 know the answer to that one, by the way, and so will you by the time you cOme to the end of this piece, i Some of the most confusion statewide relates to fishing Oklahoma's farm ponds. A recent news release ftrom the Oklahoma Wildlife Department attempts to clarify some of the aforementioned foggy issues. For example, is a license required to fish in a pond on Krivate land, and if so, why? statewide size and creek limits apply to far ponds, as well, or are these private waters exempt from general fishing regulations? ji -The answer to the first question is yes, a fishing license is required for persons fishing ponds, lakes and streams on private property, said Kim Erickson recently, fisheries chief for the Oklahoma Wildlife Department "The Wildlife Department is responsible for managing protecting and enhancing all fish and wildlife resources found in the state, whther they occur Tabitha Voss, Kimberly Thresher, Katy Myers, back row, Brooke Nelson, Tara Summers, Crystal Scott, Heather Ward and Brittany Neely. Not pictured Ashley Williams. The squad with cheer for both the football team sponsored by the Sand Springs Salvation Army and the basketball teams sponsored by die school district right, front row, Jacqul DuPree, on public or private land.

The Department la funded by those who are the primary users of fish and wildlife resources hunters and anglers. The Department has established fees and regulations to both find and regulate the harvest of fish and wildlife to provide sustainable, equi-, table use of those resources. Erickson added that the rights of private landowners to use their property are certainly recognized by the Wildlife Department In fact numerous fishing license exemptions are given to the landowners and their relatives who fish In ponds located on property they own. Specifically resident owners or tenants, their spouses, parents, grandparents, children and their spouses, grandchildren and their spouses are not required to possess a fishing license when fishing in ponds on property they own or lease. However, those qualifying under these exmptions must carry written evidence of exemption while fishing.

"Although numerous licens ing exemption apply to private pond, there are no relating to dally creel or size limits," Erickson said. "In other words, those fishing In private ponds must follow statewide limits outlined In the Fishing Regulations booklet. Just because you are fishing In a private pond does not mean you can keep as many fish as you want. So there you have it. Somewhat clear, a little bit foggy.

More people, more regulations all the time. The reason you can only' catch and keep crappie in. Oklahoma Is because back in the late 40s or early 60s when the regulation was designed, politicians (those then in control of state fish and game laws) got In an agreement about what was the proper number of crappie to keep. Some said 23, some said 50. Thirty-seven? An Oklahoma political compromise, which in the strange world of Oklahoma politics, make! all the sense in the world.
