At the late school election in this district J. W. Carson was elected Treasurer, but declined to take the oath of office prescribed by statute. The objectionable feature to Mr. Carson is the obligation to support the constitution of tho United States and of the State of Kansas.

Some teachers are so bard up that their first offers to teach are for $35 per month. Such affairs might be excusable at the last stage of the game, but at the beginning it is suicidal. So long as we have uch teachers, so long will the profession be weighed in the balances and found wanting. At such wages, teaching is beggarly. A scholarship in the Winchester Academy costs $250 in shares, or $125 cash.

We hear that D.J. Greist, Wilhelm Gorham, and Carsou, will invest in scholarships. Who comes next? Most any of us can take a share. Most of our enterprising citizens talk of buying shares. With this kind of a start, it will not be long till the required number (200) will be sold.

Prospects Flattering far Fonnding an Academy at Winchester. This is very gratifying to our citi zens, and they have taken hold of the matter in earnest. At a meeting of. the Ways and Means committee, held evening, it was decided to submit the following plan at the next meeting of the friends of the movement TOrganize a stock company representing a capital of $3,000, divided into 300 shares, or $10 per share, two-thirds of which must be sold, and fifty per cent, demanded, so that $1,000 shall be realized, which will be a sufficient atuonut to purchase a building, and thus insure the establishment on a sound basis this much needed institution of learning. This plan, no doubt, will be received.

In all probability the Christian Church building here will be purchased, and named Academy. It is very suitable, and can be remodeled as required. Let tho good work go on. A Thorangh -Farmer. Capt.

J. N. Insley, of Oskaloo6a, the man who fenght the grasshoppers more persistenly, and invented more ways for their destruction than any other man-in the country, and yet, after all, had to succumb, is a notable example of that grit and vitality which has made, sustained, aud still characterizes the commonwealth of the umpire State. A visit to tho Captain's neat, new farm will verTfy this, and, besides, repay any one well who wants a practical hint about hedge rows, shade trees, artificial groves, or in short, neat husbandry. After you have had yonr dinner, and a chance to get a word in edgewise with his genial little wife, the Captain will take rightful pleasure in showing you the fruits of his faith iu the doctrine of "final perseverance" this year Eighty acres of corn over head high, all a third planting, and after the 20th of June; millet, by actual measurement, a half inch over seven feet high, with beads sixteen aud a half inches long, and still acres of rutabagas, beets, turnips, cucumbers, beans, vines, pumpkins, melons and squashes Some specimens of a mammoth variety of the later we found by measurement to be already over fi'e feet in circurafereuce, though only four weeks from the blossom.

From six-hills, or eighteen vines of this variety, the Captain will grow this season four thousand pouuds of fruit. Long may he wave. Xext.
