frustrated at 5 clock last evening In the face of a large callher revolver Carey fought single handed two unmasked robbers who entered his place of business the two men finally fleeing Carey attacked them with his open knife up and out with your wras the command given bv one of the robbers' after Carey had taken the two men to a rear room in his store to look at some feed and be was the response and at the same instant Carey struck at the man holding the revolver The sec ond robber who stood at Careys back seized the storekeeper around' the neck and attempted to force him to the floor Carey with his drawn pocketknife was in the act of striking his nearest assail ant when the robber started to retreat He fell over a pair of platform scales and partially into a barrel of flour would be robbers both ran out a door and escaped down an alley POLICE RUSH TO SCENE not in the least disturbed his experience notified police headquar ters Capt Crane Lieut Kinney of detective department and Drill Master ranklin hurried in the emergency auto mobile to the feed store while Motorcy clemen Stone and Pressley driving at fifty miles an hour raced to the scene Within twenty minutes after the at tempted theft nearly every officer in the police department had a description of the robbers arid was for suspi cious characters When the news of" the bold work was spread in the neighborhood of the feed store nearly 300 men and boys turned Out and volunteered their services in running down the culprits Jackson 2846 Highland Place a dairyman delivering milk in that vicin ity says he saw the two men run out of an alley near Thirteenth street and Park avenue and lt is believed they boarded a Central avenue car near that point One of the men described as wearing a blue suit was reported with Superintendent Hyland announced last night that he personally would give a reward of $50 to the person who would give the department informa tion that would lead to the arrest and conviction of either one or both of the holdup men am convinced that the work is be ing done by outside talent but believe there is some on?
