C6 BANGOR DAILY NEWS TUESDAY JUNE 3 1997 Pro BaseballSports Wells lead Yankees past Red Sox The Associated Press BOSTON Neither David Wells nor Paul has had much success at Fenway Park Looks like both turned their luck around went 3-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and Wells pitched seven solid innings on Monday night to give the New York Yankees a 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox one here period is exciting for me pitched very poorly in Fenway just a battle for said Wells who had been 6-14 in Boston over his career time I win here I have to celebrate with a bottle of champagne something about this place I hate it This stadium is not made for The Yankees won the last three games of the series after losing the opener 10-4 when Boston hit six home runs Since Saturday is 8-for-16 with eight RBIs Previously he was batting 242 at Fenway matter where you he said hitting good Sometimes not With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh Bernie Williams and Tino Martinez hit one-out singles before Vaughn Eshelman relieved Aaron Sele (6-4) followed with a line drive to right Wells (6-3) allowed six hits in winning for the fifth time in his last seven starts The left-hander struck out seven and walked two Jeff Nelson pitched the eighth and Mariano Rivera got three outs for his 16th save as sharp today as he has been but he Yankees manager Joe Torre said after 15 innings yesterday we have any other options late For Wells to get us there it was really our only Williams had two hits and scored twice for New York Sele gave up three runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings for the last place Red Sox who dropped 15 games behind Baltimore in the AL East now it (the outlook) is pretty said Vaughn -2' Blue Ox general manager Josh Gordon (right) jokes with former Boston Red Sox great George Scott before the start of Monday game against Scott's Massachusetts Mad Dogs The Mad Dogs will play a four-game series against Bangor (NEWS Photo by Michele Stapleton) Mad Dogs edge Blue Ox 3-2 in 11 Savage staying as coach By Andrew Neff Of the NEWS Staff ORONO Reliever Garrett Quinn struck out three batters in his professional baseball debut Monday night but he probably be framing the box score Quinn wishes he had one pitch back the one that Felix Colon belted deep to left-center field that rolled to the fence and drove in the winning run Thanks to hit the visiting Mad Dogs notched their first win of the season a 3-2 decision in 11 innings at Mahaney Diamond first pitch was a sinker in and I fouled it off Then he threw a slider and I got it pretty said Colon The Mad Dogs are now 1-3 this season while Bangor dips to 2-2 The Blue Ox are now 0-4 in televised home games funky three-quarter arm delivery distract Colon because the third baseman watched him pitch to two previous batters Quinn who was signed Monday afternoon struck out the first batter he faced on three pitches before Andre Keene singled to right used a good slider on both guys so I was expecting Colon said Left-hander Tim Lucey come on in relief in the eighth threw 3'3 innings of hitless relief for the win curveball kept me in it not an overwhelming powerful pitcher but when I get my curve-ball going it makes me look that much said Lucey just before getting a face full of shaving cream a ritual for rookies Lucey who hails from Milton Mass just graduated from community college last month The Mad Dogs scored first with a run in the top of the third Kirby Holmes reached base with a one-out single and scored on leadoff hitter Javier double into the left field corner Bangor answered right back with a single and double by No 8 and 9 hitters Chad White and Carlos Mota to lead off the bottom of the third White scored on Dave sacrifice fly to deep center Designated hitter Bob Zupcic made it 2-1 Blue Ox in the fourth with a 390-foot home run his first this season over the fence in left-center This time the Dogs answered quickly With runners on first and second Brown tied the game with a single to right Bangor threatened to retake the lead in the eighth with runners on first and third and no outs but Eke-lund was cut down at the plate trying to score on a ground ball to shortstop With runners at first and second and one out Lucey struck out Zupcic on three pitches and closed the curtain on the Ox threat by retiring Hugh Walker on a fly ball to right field Savage from C4 Cal Bubar a Brewer real-estate owner who serves spokesman for the group acknowledged that roughly 67 percent of those interviewed for the petition approved of performance While most praised the coach for among other things developing the outdoor preparedness program others expressed concern about of Bubar said The group went forward with the petition after meetings with school administrators failed to produce the results they wanted So far debate has mostly occurred behind closed doors and in executive sessions At meeting however critics publicly chided Savage for what they describe as a taskmaster approach to coaching and the appearance of favoritism toward certain players own personal problem with him is that he has an uneven way of handing out said Ted Kimball whose son plays for the junior varsity team kids will be played some will be benched but not on their Cheryl Jacobs another junior varsity parent calls this divide and conquer pitting players against each other to foster competition son told me one day that half the kids on the team like each she said they all liked each other last year What Critics also said they feared not having much of a voice on the upcoming evaluation committee With a makeup of two administrators two coaches one school board representative and two members of the public the committee is bound to be sympathetic to concerns they said supporters meanwhile said the coach is misunderstood: His perfectionism is often mistaken for harshness his energy and drive for arrogance Ironically the call for dismissal comes on the heels of his recognition by the state with the 19 Maine High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award In his nomination letter Principal Jerry Goss praised Savage noting attitude that has become highly A 1983 graduate of the University of Maine Savage recently completed his 10th season as head coach During his rookie season in 1988 he directed his team to an Eastern Maine Class A pulled in Game 2 Ironically the fact the game is in Philly does not necessarily help the cause The fans there are just as unsure about the goaltending situation as is Murray The airwaves of sports talk shows in Philly shows that are brutally acerbic when a Philly team is losing are filled with fan questions about both goaltenders If Snow has a bad start in Game 2 the fans will not hesitate to let go a blast of unfriendly home crowd boo Murray would have the option of trying the play again and bring in Hextall to relieve Snow or use Hextall in Game 3 Game 1 start was everything the Flyers hoped would not happen It was just bad enough to again raise the issue of who starts and not bad enough to answer the question The one thing the Flyers hoped would not happen was to have the focus of any game in the series become their goaltending That has already happened Yesterday Snow and Hextall were smiling as they sat down to meet the press together Hextall said tired of the press calling to see if starting I changed my Snow replied too cheap to change my number I just answer th Joked Hextall give you $20 to get it No pressure between these two Detroit continues to have its answer in Mike Vernon He the back-up goalie during the regular season has started every play-off game He has been superb Just why Scottie Bowman made that move for the play-offs is an intriguing question and it will be one of the great hockey stories if the Red Wings go on to win the Cup Bowman told me first series we were going against Grant Fuhr in net for St Louis I wanted a veteran goaltender who had faced Fuhr in the playoffs before and Vernon had done that I just think you need someone who can look down the ice and see Fuhr and not be intimidated by his great The Detroit writers who cover the team buy that answer and believe there was something more having to do with regular season starter Chris Osgood that Bowman has not said If that is the case he may never say For Vernon the personal slakes are interesting Not only can he win the Cup but he has a contract clause that says if the Wings win he gets another year on his contract guaranteed with a pay increase Otherwise he becomes a free agent That is a win win win situation Snow is the answer to the Flyers goalie conundrum tonight in Game 2 It is an answer on which hangs the opportunity to drink from the Stanley Cup WhNen 2 0 11 Bragg Sojo
