their bridge Nation' i i honors veterans Associated Press Somber vigils for missing soldiers and remembrances of the dead mixed with triumphant patriotism in parades and ceremonies Tuesday -a Veterans Day that brought new Vietnam monuments from Olympia Wash to Baltimore Three jets roared over the Florida state Capitol police sirens shrieked and high-school bands blared military tunes as veterans marched through Tallahassee Hundreds of spectators lined the streets to watch a bagpipe brigade ROTC units military tanks trucks and war veterans wind along the parade route By contrast there was the often-solemn ceremony in the Massachusetts statehouse Hall of the Flags where several speakers talked of the need to spare future generations from taking up arms Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger a weather brought tears streaming down one young face But she bravely continued swirling her streamer along with her classmates from School of Dance Only two units followed the dance students in the parade that carefully marched across the slick pavement of the Veterans Remembrance Bridge on Tuesday The aspiring dancers had to dance in place waiting as 81 other units made their way across the span ahead of them The parade commemorated the veterans and also marked the dedication of Veterans Remembrance Bridge An estimated 10000 to 15000 people lined the parade route on Veterans Day 1986
