This cinder cone and associated lava flow, which is the remains of the last volcanic action in the San Francisco Peaks field, has played host to more than 800,000 isitors since it was set aside as a national monument by President Hoover on May 25, 1930. Mere than 97,000 of the visitors saw the scenic aid geological features of the area during 1961, according to superintendent Russell L. Mahan. Under the Mission 66 program, one designed to improve national parks, an excellent paved road has been constructed to make the features readily accessible.
