second clear-cut daily loss of 1961 On all other sessions regardless of what the market averages did there were always more gainers than losers Tuesday the statitics confirmed each other with a slight drop in the average backed by a preponderance of losers over gainers It was high time for profit taking brokers said and besides the news was not conducive to a further rally While industrials backed down however rails once more advanced against the general trend Tobaccos and building materials also were higher on balance The Associated Press average of 60 stocks fell 50 to 22730 with industrials down 180 rails up 120 and utilities off 10 It was the first appreciable decline in this average since Jan 3 the initial day of 1961 trading when the average fell 150 Monday the aver-Sjage dropped a minimum -10 while more issues advanced than declined Of 1269 issues traded 572 de clined and 456 advanced There were 34 new highs for and two new lows International Railways of Central America preferred and Murphy Co Volume slipped to 383 million shares from 451 million Monday Eight of the 15 most active stocks advanced and seven declined American Stock Exchange prices moved irregularly as volume fell to 124 million shares from 157 million Monday Corporate bonds were narrowly mixed US government bonds were higher Corporate bond volume on the New York Stock Exchange fell below $7 million for the first time in five sessions The total was $619 million compared with $728 million Monday Commodities By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Price changes in commodities futures trading set an uneven pattern Tuesday with gains slightly outnumbering losses at the close New York cotton all sold soy-beam: ontractSjcoffee and copper futures were among the best gainers Cocoa rubber raw hides and feed grain futures finished lower Commission house buying increased toward the close helping cotton to an advance up to 70 cents a bale Copper futures moved Rhead about one fourth cent a pound in the wake of price declines announced by major producers The rise in coffee' futures also was in the quarter cent range World sugar lead and cottonseed oil futures edged a little higher Wheat likewise was mixed at the finish while com oats and rye were down fractionally Cocoa futures off 15 to 21 off a cent a pound were depressed by private estimates putting probable African crop yields at higher levels Hides
