12 Bangor Daily News Monday April 25 1977 day Apr I 25 1977 'SOMERSET Six records set in Kenduskeaq race record in 4tie C-2 medium beginner class with a time of 2:3205 breaking the mark of Blaine Burlingame and David Botfield by plenty Burlingame and time was 2:4855 in 1976 In the C-2 long-beginner group Charles Fitzgerald and Rollin Thurlow of Atkinson clocked a 2 4834 Last year Paul Ryan and Roderick Quinn's time was 2: 51 26 The other winners were Bob and Karen Stram of Dresden in the C-2 mixed-experienced class (2:2505) George Walsh of Jay and Ed Mendes of Harpswell in the C-2 short-experienced (2:2050) the father and son act of Mike and Bob Waddle in the C-2 medium-experienced class (2:1748) Bill Flahive Sr and Bill Flahive Jr in the bracket (2:4124) Bob and Candy ly clas (2:2017) Jeff Wren of Orono in the K-l ope She than the race record time for all classes The Waddles clocked a 2:0245 in the C-2 medium class in 1974 The closest races of the day came in the C-2 mixed-beginner and the C-2 long-experienced classes In the C-2 mixed-beginner class the McQuilkins shaded Thomas Morrison of Old Town and Sally Badnes of Stillwater by 31 seconds while in the C-2 long-experienced group Poor and LaFond tipped Peter Selwood and George Hart both of Winthrop by 32 seconds The largest margins were posted by Vincent and the team of Fitzgerald and Thurlow margin over runner-up Irving Gilbert of Hermon was 12:13 with Fitzgerald and Thurlow besting Michael Fairbanks and Earle Porter both of Bangor by 16:50 A total of 25 craft did not finish the race but many more took spills Included in the field was Don Lynch of Hampden Highlands whose partner was the center of attention His partner for the race? His pet dog Baggins who according to Lynch a good time" Tony Trafton of Kenduskeag lasted over 10 miles in a bathtub before calling it quits The weight of the tub made the portages impossible One racer who defend his title due to injury was former UMO football coach Walter Abbott who was sidelined with a back ailment Abbott and Al Lewis were the C-2 long-experienced champs a year ago There was a fine turn-out of spectators for the event with most of them anxiously awaiting the activity at Six-Mile Falls where many o( craft were capsized by the rocks and re ids In the third annual Cement Canoe Race Brad Koji and Mark Johnson of the University of New Hampshire won for the third straight year with a record setting time of 1:3232 UMO boats were second and third with Mike Booth and Dean Pottle directing the second place craft in 1:3312 and Dennis Curtis and Dave Foster posting a 1 :3756 for third over the 98 mile course Just 14 of the 30 craft finished UMass won the American Concrete In award for canoe construction and Southeastern Massachusetts won the concrete life ring for the worst disaster By Larry Mahoney Of The NEWS Staff Although the water level was low canoeists paddled to race records in six classes at the 11th annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race conducted under partly cloudy skies Saturday A record field of 248 craft entered Records were set in the C-l C-2 women C-2 mixed beginner C-2 short beginner C-2 medium beginner and C-2 long beginner classes The latter five classes were new last year In the C-l class Ralph Vincent of Glover Vt toured the 16-mile course in 2:2237 to break the old record of 2 3422 set by Wayne Gilman of Old Town in 1970 The C-2 class was initiated at race time last year with winners Sue Crowley and Monnie Leary posting a time of 3:205 Elaine Roy of Orono and Ann Mason of Old Town snapped that with a 2:5920 Allan and Gail Fuller covered the stream in 3:0600 to set the mark in the C-2 mixed-beginner bracket a year ago On Saturday David and Sandra McQuilkins of Dixmont eclipsed that by over 17 minutes with a time of 2:4841 In the C-2 short-beginner group Dickey of Carmel and Greg Canders of Hampden were the winners in 2:3554 A year ago a race-record time of 2:5341 was claimed by John Van Buren and Carl Stewart Steve Stearns of Goodwin Mills and Eugene Meserve of Biddeford have the new man group (2:1030) and a Brunswick team of Roger Poor and Peter LaFond in the C-2 long-experienced class (2:2450) In the new classes Cathy Hammond of Bangor was the K-l woman champ in 3:12 Fred Bechard of Wells and Walt Musson of Bangor claimed the title in the Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society class in 2:4040 and the PPSC entrant skippered by Bill Stearns won the bateau race which kicked off the race Vincent Wren the Waddles the Sheltons and the team of Walsh and Mendes defended titles they captured during the 1976 race time of 2: 1030 was the best of the day but was over seven minutes slower Shedding the excess While teacher and husband of NEWS staffer Nancy Remsen and I were helping Phil Andrews of the Mad River Canoe Company in Hampden load a 16 foot Royalex canoe on my Datsun Ken and I were about to enter the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race It was to be the second canoe trip of my life The first was two weeks ago As Ken and I drove to Kendeskeag Village we made a couple of stops to plot our strategy Ken decided that we were going to take the left chute when we come to Six Mile Falls the race's biggest challenge Ken has canoed most of his life which gives me a little confidence He has just one fault according to wife Nancy He faints in cold water Take that and combine it with my fear of the water and the Five Waters Communications Group responsible for rescue operations could have a helluva time if we ever capsize NEWS staffer David Bright supplied me with additional confidence during the week by giving me a paddle with rosary beads taped on it I chuckled when Bright left the pad die on my desk but as race time drew near I lost my sense of1 humor Nothing seemed funny 1 Sometimes one must hide one's feel ings so I attempted to make jokes to hide my nervousness Nothing seemed funny (o anybody else either After 1 nearly tipped the canoe over just prior to the start number 130 was called and we set off Ken was in the stern rattling off directions and I was in the bow The course is lined with such breath taking sites as tree stumps mud and brown grass If I been so exhausted sure I would have wanted to take pictures My arms began aching so I asked Ken how far we had gone half a mile" was the response The arms eventually get used to the paddling so boredom sets in Ken and 1 chatted to cure the boredom caused by the flat water and Ken's easy going manner and sense -of humor was refreshing and helped me gain confidence At one point he apologized for sounding like a slave driver just after he had told me to pick up my pace I told him that I would get even by spelling his name wrong in this story As of right now it has been spelled correct iy- Five miles into the race we en countered a likeable pair of individuals in craft 128 They are Dennis King of Bangor and Robert Volock of Old Town We go stride for stride for a mile or two know that I land-mined the stream last night" spurted King After eight miles the exhaustion set in and the nervousness returned due to the fact that Six Mile Falls is coming up soon As we approached the Falls Ken reiterated the strategy My heart beat increased rapidly For the first time in the race there are hordes of people on the banks I compare them with vultures waiting for the kill Where were they when we were paddling on the flat water?
