The Sunday afternoon class of MOUTH the Mentor's Organization for the Unusual Teachings of Howard was under way After a quick check to see that his hairpiece was in place Prof Hoozit added nice to see you smiling again Mr McGee Mr Mottola and Mr Naviaux Also you Mr Halliday "I know the excruciation you have suffered up to this point but now your Colby Maritime Connecticut and Belfast teams have finally tasted vistory It must be sweet indeed They nodded in unison with the feeling it would keep what The Great One Called the stilled for a time "Mr Kemp you did a bit of surprising yourself with your BU team and survived the period of animadversive antics of a few and threw the Yankee Conference into a wide open There was a stir in the back of the room that made Howard turn from a quick glance of admiration of himself in a mirror "Oh excuse me Mr Orofrio I forgot your Missouri Tigers pulled one of the day's surprises beating Nebraska Certainly that should cause a rise in your rating" Turning back to the front row he said Naviaux it just proves that patience and perseverance pay off You lost your first six games before winning I said to Mr Martin if the World Series was the best seven out of 13 possibly his Yankees might have won a game By then the Redlegs would be worn out from running the bases "Mr Hersom you seem to be in the driver's seat nght now in the state Class A race but your Eddies had better watch it this week Mr Perkins could catch you by surprise at Rumford "The Yankees almost caught the Reds reading their press clippings in the early part of that fourth game with that atrocious base running "As I said in my Playboy interview only yesterday it can happen Howard dug into his portfolio and dug out from under his mirror comb denture glue and assorted pictures of himself a metric slide rule "This Mr Brennan and Mr Hadley will be used during the week to decide the outcome of your game Saturday John Bapst is home and it will be under lights so must get a point or two there but even this method can prove vacillating Old Town has displayed no inertia and while Mr Brennan's team has displayed a fine offense the Indians of Mr Hadley have been defensive stalwarts "It will be a polemical affair to say the least" A HAND raised in the back "Yes Mr Violette?" "I just want to point out to Mr Schembechler at Michigan that the longer the winning streak the tougher they get Pitt will find that out the Winslow coach added after a late surge vs Skowhegan exactly what I was telling the new Chinese leader Kua Kuo feng only yesterday That spheroid can do some funny things "By the way Mr Gatto I must say you provide some dramatic endings to your Bates games playing defense the first half and offense the second half But Mr Mottola your Maritime team can be surprising too winning with one minute to go You have a flair for the dramatic "I've always liked that element of surpirse why I wait until the right moment to put Alex and Giffer straight during those Monday night games" He began piling things back into the portfolio unable to resist one last look in the mirror "Now gentlemen I must be off and check that new lineup of teams in the NBA Nets? Pacers? What's happening to that fine league? "But I must prepare myself because I feel they soon will be calling on me for my expertise in that field too" Thus another weekly meeting of MOUTH ended But it didn't end The Mouth Nothing it seems beaten a Ram squad since his days as an assistant at Rumford High School back in the late 1960 and the Blue Devils' last win over Bangor was in 1969 Last season Bangor and Lewiston met at Gprland Street Field with both teams having but one loss and the Rams handed Lewiston a 40-12 setback At the Lewiston Athletic Park last Saturday Haley and the Blue Devils ended their drought and avenged last season's loss to the tune of a convincing 34-0 triumph embarrassed us last year and that plus the fact Lewiston hasn't beaten Bangor in six years provided us with added explained Haley whose club exploded for 28 of its points in the second half en route to the victory In that second half Lewiston scored on four of its six offensive possessions and three of the touchdowns were set up by a swarming Blue Devil defensive unit which held the Rams to 16 total offensive yards and threw Ram ballcarriers for 34 yards worth of losses A six-yard run by the Rams' sophomore quarterback Tom Vanidestine represented Bangor's longest gain in the second half The fact Lewiston has turned in strong second-half performances in the majority of its games this season is a reflection upon the conditioning program according to Haley "The players lift weights at least twice a week during the season in order to maintain the strength they have attained by lifting weights in the off season" pointed out Haley The Lewiston coach said an adjustment in the defensive unit which allows the ends to put pressure on the opposition's quarterback and leaves the linebackers responsible for covering passes to backs flaring out of the backfield has proven beneficial It was indeed fruitful Saturday as Vanidestine was sacked six times for losses totaling 46 yards The first Lewiston sack of the second half set up a touchdown as small but speedy end Ron Boisvert hit Vanidestine from the blind side causing a fumble which was recovered by the other through and dropped a Trojan runner in the endzone for a safety The scoreboard read 8 6 in favor of the Indians St Peter intercepted an errant Trojan toss late in the second canto and it took the Indians nine plays to go from their own 38 for their second touchdown and they did it all on the ground Nelson capped the drive with a nine yard jaunt through the middle for the score On the Indian's first play from scrimmage in the second half Nelson scored his second straight TD as he took a pitchout from St Peter and scampered 37 yards into the endzone That put the Trojans out of the contest but the Indians through scoring vet Late in the third period St Peter also got his second TD on a one yard plunge and in the final period O'Connor plunged in from the one inch line Mike Holmes and Steve Murray anchored the rugged Old Town defense which held the Troian running game to just 63 yards and Nelson was the key to the Indian secondary as he intercepted one pass and knocked down four more Tom Riddell and Doug Moulton were defensive stalwarts for tne Trojans who were dropping their fifth encounter against a pair or LTC wins After the Bapst game the Indians will close out their campaign against Orono Nov 6 MiOesfi Old Town 10 14 the large partisan crowd with his running as he rambled for 152 yards in a superb individual effort Nelson got plenty of running assistance from teammate Mike O'Connor who rushed for another 107 yards himself as Bump Hadley's charges rolled up 335 yards on the ground Ken Libbey's gritty Trojans gave the Indians all they could handle over the first two periods before bowing to the superior running game of the winners The Indians took the opening kickoff on windswept Victory Field and marched 65 yards on the ground aided by a 15 yard penalty against the Trojans for the first score with 7 09 left
