No better illustration of what the Rail- foad avenue Chinatown is doing for the eity Is needed than to observe the march of V4V1VB, Wm A s- "i days the broad-gauire line was the only war of Retting into Alameda, and natural- ly Park street and Railroad avenue was the business center. Today that vicinity should be the very best in all Alameda, but, instead, it is the canter of a lot of disgraceful out inside half an hour should a respectable conflagration occur in their snldst, and Alameda's shameful Chinatown la responsible for it all. There are valentines tn the windows of the stationers' torescomic, horrors and the tender ttntelry which Tails tenderer sentimentality in bad verse. But the lovelorn twain docs not run so much to these tributes to his lady fair at ha did a few yean ago. He hat found other wayt to make hit love known to hit lovey-dovey-1-whereat the atationer mournt. In order to get a proper appraisement of the love of today at compared with the "old, old lore' Thi TaiBmrn interviewed the dealers in valentines. This It what thev said: i- -I W.

B. Hardy 'Tia true that business it slightly encouraged with the advent of the valentine season, bnt nothing to (what it was three or four years ago. The tending of valentines is a custom that seems to be dying out with frightful rapidity. We sell few tine ones, the call being mostly for those of a very mediocre grade. The demand for is also small.

I and little boys and girls buy about ail that are bought at all. It is a custom that seems nearly dead among onr big boys and girls; though now and then a dude from Alameda or Ban Lorenzo comes; in and gets some mere or less handsome token for his valentine. T. Daniels shows the finest assort ment of valentines in the city. When asked as to the condition of trade in this particular line he said he had no reason to complain.

Mr. Daniels continued, "as I carry the finest goods that may be had 1 find a ready sale. We have Prang's complete samples ranging in price from two cents to ten dollars. The valentines of this season are more on the style of Christmas cards end souvenirs, as beautiful satin hand-painted sachets for gloves, handkerchiefs and ties, and are truly works of art. Theh we havr porcelain panels and plaques in large varir from Raphael Tuck fe Son.

Sngland. jorge Whitney of I Massachusetts is tl leader in tbe line of cheap valentines, at is Prang of the finest grades. Tbe old-stvle lace -valentines are the work of McLaughlin fc New York, who control the toy book business." "1 suppose -very few of these latter are now sold?" said the reporter. "No, indeed that is just what I cannot understand. For three or four years I tried to do without this class, and substitute in its stead booklets and cards, but the children would not have them and insisted on the old lace-trimming ones.

I have just filled an order for 102 of these for a single suburban dealer. Another new eatnre is In the line of comics. I do not allow any of the coarse and vulgar cartoons of other years in my Fortunately these have been superseded by smaller and neater styles that have all the desirable features of the! comic without vulgarity and (with the addition of point and healthy humor" i At M. S. Hmith fc Co.

'a a fair and gracious matron of middle age informed the reporter that they had no reason to complain as to the I briskness of trade. While no particular trace of this line of business had been kept from year to year, yet it could not be seen that this year had proved poorer than any other. They kept the same line) of high-grade articles and found a ready sale. Ladies and children were the prinoipal purchasers. Few gentlemen availed themselves of the privilege of buying valentines nowadays.

The "saleslady" did not believe this was due to the fact that men's hearts were colder than formerly, bnt sought to explain it by the fact that this was leap year, and the gentlemen were awaiting their turn to receive valentines. Taylor Co. of Broadway, near Seventh, stated that with them the valentine had ceased to be a big item in their business, and that in another year or two it would practically have died out. Mr. Taylor varied the sentiment of other dealers, that ladies and children were the buyers and that the old-style filigree valentine had given place to handsome easels and valentines in the style of Christmas cards.

There is far less of the machine-like effusion of sentiment. The token itself is at most a line and conveys the love-inspiring sentiment desired. ANNIE POT CLAIMANTS, Tbreatened Kidnaping of Little Or- I Iphan Girt, Annie Poth resides with Mrs. 8. J.

Poth on Thirteenth street, near Center. The former is an orphan (12 years of age who, until five monohs ago, lived with her aunt. Since that time the girl has been specially and kindly cared for by Mrs. Poth. A week ago a man and a woman called at Mrs4 Poth's residence and demanded that Annie be surrendered to them.

Both man and woman were unknown to Mrs. Poth, although they claimed relationship to the child. The demand was refnsed find the man claimed he would take tbe girl if he had to steal her. Poth says the girl's mother being dead, she is anxious to keep tbe child and has sought the assistance of the Humane Society. 1 Visitors at the Park.

'A (great many people visited Knox Park yesterday afternoon and inspected tbe fine improvements now in progress. Tbe fine new: street in front of the park will soon be ready for usej and will be one of the best thoroughfares in the city. The street will certainly be accepted by the city. 2 Reductions made by the manufacturers TJtk first, on the price of Waltham i and JElgia watch jjmovements; The second on the price of Boss, Crescent and Fahy's gold filled watch! cases, J- Cmnbitud, have made a difference of 30 jper cent, on the cost to the dealer. The formal opening of Haussler's photo graph parlors at 911 Broadway ast Satur- Ha, av nin- Taniirhfi nmnrlv ha-firlTAniclail as one of the social eventa of the present season, for it was in the nature of a recep tion, and a more brilliant one has not occurred in Oakland for many a month.

Everybody who attended was delightfully entertained, and thousands of people passed through the beautiful art rooms dur ing the evening. The rooms are the ones recently vacated by Dames, but so great has been the transformation that but; few peoDle realised that fact. On Saturday evening the gallery presented almost brilliant appearance. -Many electric lights flooded the rooms with their mel low glow, and flowers in profusion, with rare exotics all combine', in making a scene so beautiful that it will linger a long time in the memory of those who attended, uunng the evening a string orchestra discoursed selections trom tne eras and popular songs) i of the day, and each of the- guests received a handsome souvenir as a memento of the auspicious occasion. Miss Smith and Miss JtcCabe attired in beautiful Japanese cos tumes and another.

Miss McCabe, in German costume assisted in the reception and exhibited the works of i art and specimens of photography to the in terested visitors. These pictures are all of the highest order of the photographer's art, and possess that peculiar fullness and perfection so hard to tnno in many pictures. It almost Boemed as though the pictures could speak, so perfect were they, and the true lovers of fine art found in them much to praise. The same may be said of the crayons, pastels and oil-paintings that) were exhibited on every side. If it did nothing else the' reception ef last Saturday night showed I to an appreciative congregation of guests that in the new gallery just opened Oakland people have a "photographic parlor that certainly cannot be excelled for rare excellence of work.

Professor I Haussler has galleries in the I City of Mexico and San Jose and in these olaces the work of Professor Haussler is recognized by all the leading! families of the community. The new gallery is a model of neatness and convenience, and the lovers of fine art should find it worth while to visit the parlors, which are open evenings for the next weex. The Humane Society Unexpectedly Breaks Up a Coek Flab. i Two hundred "sports" assembled in a barn owned by Johnny Maher at the Stockyards yesterday to witness a'cock fight. But they were disappointed, at least in so far as getting tbe worth of their money was concerned. While several battles had been expected, but one fight really took place. The spectators were engaged Sn betting, and the backers of a second pair of birds were putting on tbe sharp gaffs when sud denly the doors of the barn flew; open, and in the opening stood Secretary Theobald! and a posse of constables representing the Humane Society.

I The sports took in the situation at a glance, and made a break for liberty. In their hsste, they broke in ail oirectioas; ran over benches, fell on each other, trampled on roosters in bags and fled through the neighboring country. The principal feature of the main was to have been a tight for 1500, between a pair of Australian Diraa. Golden late Votes Bonds for a New Schoolhouse. Tbe Sturdy Citizens of the Towm Are Determined That Oakland Shall Not Be first in Progress. Golden Gate, February 15. The school bond election for issuing bonds for the construction of a $15,000 school building took place Saturday. Tne proposition was car.

ried by a vote of 52 to 13, and the result was announced amid the greatest enthusi-asfu. Tbs Trustees will immediately proceed with the work. A building to contain eight classrooms, library, board room, janitor's room and teachers' room is being planned, and a structure that will be a credit to the enterprise of tbe district will be erected on the corner of San Pablo and Crawford avenues, the location of the present school-house. It is expected that the building wiil be completed by August 1st, in time for the new school year. The small number of votes cast was remarked, but id easily accounted for by the number who favored the proposition but did not vote.

A number of prominent citizens have expressed great satisfaction over the result. Said George W. Hunt, clerk of the board "There are 260 children crowded into fonr small rooms, and four teachers, have to do the work which should be done bv We asked for only a fifth of the amount tbe law permits us to raise, whicb will increase taxation but 1)4 cents per year, and will not be noticed by the largest property-holders. We have already received an otfer for the bonds from George A. Leura A Of Chicago.

They will take them at 6 per cent;" Mr. Hunt's term of office expires on the 1st of Jane, and he has been very eager to secure a favorable vote, and so is very much delighted with the outcome. John L. French is also pleased, and believes that the vote means a boom in Golden Gate real estate. Sam J.
