TIMBER By Roncfy Eickhoff star Sports Writer Thursday, April 23, 1970 The IJncolii Star Blue Grass Stakes Set To Go With 11 Entries Catfish And DDT A recent study by the Game Commission research center showed that catfish in the majority of Nebraska watersheds have a high level of DDT in fatty tissue of their bodies. Phillip Agee, a commission official, said the traces of DDT would run parts per million in the fatty tissues. course, the Pood and Drug Administration is worried about the whole fish and not just the fatty tissues, so we ran the tests on the whole he commented. found five parts per million in the whole The tests to date have only been run on the channel catfish and the Salt Creek watershed has what appears to be the highest content in the whole state of Nebraska. Originates From Lincoln The DDT, according to Agee, seems to originate from Lincoln and Ashland areas more than from the northern part of the stale.

the fish with this amount of DDT in their bodies were moved, the Food and Drug Administration would probably seize the shipment for safety Agee warned. we say the fish are poisonous to people at this level he added. certain safety measures should be taken at any rate. dre.ss the fish carefully and remove all of the fat from the body and be especially cautious in removing the strip of fat meat along the middle of the back and along the lateral line. This will get rid of the majority ol the fat.

Also, after frying the fi.sih, reuse the fat but discard DDT On Decline But anglers have to worry about further accumulation of DDT residue in their catches. CORN OFF THE COB DOUBTFUL STARTER IF TRACK NOT FAST Lexington, Ky. iJF) One of the most outstanding fields in the history of the race is entered for $25,000 added Blue Grass Stakes, the foremost prep for the Kentucky Derby. Headed by Corn Off The Cob, Naskra, Dr. Behrman, Hard Work and Protonto, a field of 11 is set to go the Vk miles that have produced seven of the last 11 Derby purse winners.

If all start, the race will be worth $33,100, with $21,515 to the winner. Corn Off The Cob, however, would be doubtful if the track is other than fast, trainer Arnold Winick said, and the forecast called for rain Wednesday night and Thursday. The Fountain of Youth Stakes winner was second just a neck and a head away in the Flamingo and Florida Derby and could earn the role in Blue Grass. Her-Jac Naskra, declared from the Flamingo and Florida Derby with a fever, has been second twice at Keeneland, but was closing fast in his la.st outing at seven furlongs. Dr.

Behrman, from the Lin-Drake Stable, was making up ground in finishing fourth in the Florida Derby, like the Blue Grass at miles and a furlong shorter than the May 2 Derby at Louisville. Hard Work and Protonto were outstanding as 2-year-olds, but both had dismal winters aldiough they have shown a trend toward their juvenile form in recent weeks at Keeneland. Also in the Blue Grass field is George A. Aggressively, a surprise third in the Santa Anita Derby and the hope for his owner to repeat his 1962 Derby victory with Decidedly. Others going Thursday include Benjamin and Action Getter, W.

C. Shield, Robert Dust Commander, Cecil Kadan, and Winston Villager. Winick said he felt some fans are trying to pin the label on Corn Off The Cob because of the two narrow defeats in Florida, I think horses feel that way. just looking to get a good race in him and get him back in good Winick added, then on to Mack Miller, drainer for the Cragwood Stable of metals magnate Charles Engelhard, said the colt would have to finish in the Blue Grass to run back in the Protonto, set back perhaps by the Santa Anita strike last winter, was a disappointment until a recent 61-furlong victory here over older horses. Trainer Jimmy Conway said all he wants from Dr.

Behrman in the blue grass is a good effort sure get it assuming he comes out of the race all right, ship to Churchill Hard Work, flying the colors of Charles Dixiana Stable, seem to keep his mind on running before he came to Kentucky a few weeks ago, trainer Chuck Werstler said. However, the Futurity winner of last year rounded into shape at Keeneland and put down a field that included Naskra and Action Getter in a sprint event. The draw for Blue Grass post positions put Dust Commander on the rail with the others, in order, Kadan, Protonto, Naskra, Aggressively, Admiral's Shield Corn Off The Cob. Villager, Action Getter, Hard Work and Dr. Behrman.

Last blue grass went to Arts and Letters and. although he finished second to Majestic Prince in the derby, he later was named horse of the year. In 1968, Forward Pass won the Blue Grass and also finished second in the Derby, but was awarded the pot when an illegal medication was found in Image, the winner. A court fight still surrounds that controversial race. Other Derby winners supplied from Blue Grass ranks include Proud Clarion in 1967: Lucky Debonair, 1965; Northern Dancer, 1964; Cateaugav, 1963; Decidedly, 1962, and Tomy Lee, is on the stopped using it Agee said.

Pinch- hitter Mike De la Hoz cracked a two-run homer in the seventh inning Wednesday night to give Indianapolis a 6-4 Amreican Association baseball victory over Omaha. The Indians took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the third inning on singles by Frank Duffy, Stan Swanson and Al Crawford, and two Omaha errors.

Duffy drove in the first Indianapolis run with a double in the first, scoring Clyde Mashore who had walked. The Royals tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh when Scott Northey homered, driving in Juan Rios who had singled. SEAVER SETS RECORD Stifles Padres On 19 Whiffs INCLUDING 10 STRAIGHT -SET FOR OMAHA MAY 11 Art For Hernandez Scheduled Fight With Brasier consecutive 10-round main even fight was announced here Wednesday for Omaha middleweight Art Hernandez.

Matchmaker Tom Lovgren of the Cornhuskcr Boxing Club, said Hernandez, a solid contender for the middleweight championship of the world, would meet Larry Brasier of Oklahoma City. The card is scheduled for Omaha Civic Auditorium on 11 beginning at 8 p.m. The remainder of the bouts have not been finalized, but the all-pro card will feature six fights with 34 rounds of action. Lovgren noted that negotiations are almost complete that will send unbeaten heavyweight Ron Slander of Council Bluffs against his toughest opponent to date. Under consideration at this time are Bob Smith of Detroit, Charlie Singleton of Milwaukee and Ernie Shaver of Warren, Ohio.

The three are generally regarded as the best in their division between Chicago and the West Coast. Meanwhile, Hernandez is drawing considerable national attention after his recent unanimous decision over Jimmy Lester, the rated middleweight. The veteran Omahan scored heavily against Lester in a bout that many ringside observers felt was the best ever offered here. Hernandez and his manager, Dick Noland, are both anxiously awaiting revised ratings by Ring Magazine and the World Boxing As.sociation in hopes that Hernandez will be in the exclusive top 10 ratings again. Hernandez has been in the top 10 three times and once ranked as high as sixth.

He now has a fashionable 38-12-2 record in a pro career that has seen him fight five world's champions from coast to coast and throughout Europe. His May 11 opponent is described as a great puncher by manager Pat of the Starmaker Boxing Club of Oklahoma City. Brasier has a 22-5 record, having turned pro while in the service. He is a native of Ohio. Ak-Sar-Ben Races Will See Du Call Omaha 46-day meeting, May 1-July 4, has drawn outstanding stock from coast to coast.

Representing the Weest Coast will be a three-horse stable trained by Herbert Conley of Tygh Valley, Ore. Heading the stable is Du Call, a five-year-old who is being freshened up here after a successful campaign at Arizona Downs and Turf Paradise. During the winter in Arizona, Du Call made off with five stakes and handicaps the Arizona Downs Handicap, the Scottsdale Mile, the Handicap, the Valley of the Sun Handicap and the Centennial Handicap. Included was a track record of 1:34 2-5 for the mile at Turf Paradise. First up for Du Call at Ak-Sar- Ben is expected to be the $15,000 Beef State Handicap scheduled for the second day, May 2.

And Du Call will have to be razor sharp as other possible candidates for the Beef State include the of last Big Four Mrs. Raymond popular Vale of Tears, winner of two straight Cornhusker Handicaps; M. H. Van Zorba 2nd, winner of the George Memorial Handicap; Charles Might, winner of the Omaha Gold Cup; and Rose Arrowdan, winner of the Cup. While this is Du first year at Ak-Sar-Ben, trainer Conley has been here before.

By Associated Press Tom Seaver, the hard-throwing right-hander who lifted the New York Mets to their astonishing World Series triumph last fall, tied the major league record with 19 strikeouts and set a record with 10 straight strikeouts Wednesday as the Mets edged the San Diego Padres 2-1. Seaver gave up two hits, a home run to Al Ferrara in the second and an infield single in the fourth to Dave Campbell. It was Ferrara, however, who whiffed in the ninth to give Seaver his 10th straight strikeout. In other day games, the Chicago Cubs, with Don bat providing much of the spark, won their seventh straight by beating St. Louis 7-5, Philadelphia defeated San Francisco 6-1, Boston beat Baltimore 5-2 and the Minnesota Twins downed the Chicago White Sox 3-1.

performance erased the old record for consecutive strikeouts of eight held jointly by four pitchers. He equalled the game record of 19 set by St. Steve Carlton against the Mets last Sept. 15. Kessinger hit an inside-the- park homer and two singles as the Cubs beat the Cards and Ferguson Jenkins, a 21-game winner last year, got his first victory in three starts this spring.

Leron Lee, a Cardinal rookie, got his first major league homer and Joe Torre also had a four-bagger for St. Louis. A fifth-inning homer by John Briggs that accounted for three runs helped lift the Phillies past the Giants, while Carl single with two out in the seventh snapped a tie and gave the Red Sox their triumph over Baltimore. It was the first loss after three straight victories for Baltimore pitcher Dave McNally. The Twins got a two-run homer from Cesar Tovar in the fifth against the White Sox in a game shortened to five innings by rain.

The night schedule had Los Angeles at Montreal, Houston at Pittsburgh, Detroit at Cleveland and the New York Yankees at a pair of West Coast games Kansas City at Oakland and Milwaukee at California. Steve Blass fired a three-hitter and the Pittsburgh Pirates used a 10-hit atack, including three apiece by Roberto Clemente and Manny Sanguillen, to defeat the Houston Astros 6-1 Wednesday night. Mickey Lolich scattered five hits and became the major first four-game winner Wednesday night, pitching Detroit to a 5-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. In a night game, Steve three-hitter gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 6-1 triumph over the Houston Astros. The Pirates tagged three Houston hurlers for 10 hits with Roberto Clemente and Manny Sanguillen each getting three.

Also at night, Mickey Lolich became the first four- game winner as he scattered five hits in the Detroit 5-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians and Don five-hitter earned him his third victory against one loss as the Los Angeles Dodgers dropped Montreal 0-2. Mike Einstein stroked a sacrifice fly in the 18th inning, enabling the Washington Senators to trim the New York Yankees 2-1 Wednesday night. NEWCOMER OUT FOR SEASON York Wins Own Invitational By YIRGIL PARKER Prep Sports Writer York Despite the absence of distance ace Lee Newcomer, sidelined for the rest of season with a broken foot, York won its invitational track meet here Wednesday afternoon. The Dukes amassed 42 points to pull past ninnerup Seward which finished with 37 counters in the 11-team field. Newcomer watched with his left foot encased in a cast. The holder of the best Class mile clocking in the state this year, he won the four-lap event at the state meet last year and also was his cross country king during both his junior and senior seasons.

But York took the lead with three events remaining to be scored with a victory in the two- mile relay. The Dukes pulled farther in Seward was disqualified from the 880 relay, as York finished second, and I wrapped it up in the final relay 1 (mile) with another runnerup finish as Seward failed to place.

The meet had a pair of double winners as Central Steve Zikmund captured both hurdle events, while Paul Nevels of Lincoln Pius sped to victory in the 100 and 220-yard dashes. Despite the blowing gale, which was not an aiding wind but rather a bothersome crosswind, Nevels set a meet record in the century with a :10.1 timing. One other mark fell when Ron Coleman of David City Aquinas 1 sailed the discus out 153-5. Huskers See Reshuffling As Mid-Point Is Reached RODGERS GOES TO FLANKER By HAL BROWN Star Sports Editor Another major reshuffling of Nebraska football lineups took place Wednesday as the Huskers reached the mid-point of spring football practice, their 10th of 20 scheduled sessions that will wind up May 9 with the annual intrasquad game. Major changes saw John Rodgers, the sophomore from Omaha, moving up to No. 1 at flanker; Doug Johnson, another Omaha sophomore, moving to No.

Devaney had indicated earlier that if Newton and Diimler both continued to impress this spring, an effort would be made to find a place Dumler could play regularly.

In other major position switches, Dick Ruppert, a 6-2, 215-pounder from Los Angeles, was moved from defensive end to defensive tackle and ran with the No. 2 unit Wednesday and Willie Harper, a sophomore middle guard from Toledo, was shifted to the No. 3 defensive left end post. The Huskcr coaching staff also had scheduled Joe Ordiina and Jeff Kinney to split time with the No. 1 unit at the I-back spot, but Kinney was sent in early when he began suffering chills.
