You've got to realize that one out of every five vehicles sold today is a pickup." Whitco is not stopping with introduction of its own Rough Rider equipment; it also is planning a major thrust into the non-automotive market, using its technical and manufacturing expertise in cut-and- sew operations and metal fabrication. These new products will be geared for a number of markets, including products in the marine, lawn and garden. motorcycle, sporting goods, leisure time, agricultural implement, airline and recreational vehicle markets. Begun originally as White Manufacturing Co. back in the late 1950s by Richard T, Bingman and partners, the company progressed at a modest level making, among other things, aluminum floral display stands. Then in the early 1960s, as White Automotive Corp. the firm got its first impetus through the manufacture of front locking hubs for four-wheel drives and Jeep tops for Jeep when it was part of Kaiser. Bingman is now sole stockholder of the firm. In the late 1960s, after expanding its business to include other four-wheel-drive accessories, notably roll bars, and gaining contracts with other major auto manufacturers, Whitco moved from a plant on Fillmore Street to a 30,000-square-foot plant at its present headquarters at 4401 N. Cascade Ave. In 1972 the plant expanded to 45.000 square feet. That plant currently has 28 employes and is undergoing an addition of 10,000 square feet to its 15,000-square-foot plant. Other recent expansion includes the addition last year of a design and engineering center, with eight employes, at 4825 Northpark Drive. That facility contains 6,600 square feet of space and is used for design and engineering. The company also established a sales office in Detroit, dose to major customers. The local plant employs some 230 employes, up 15 per cent from a year ago, and most of these are women because of the large amount of expert ^wing required. TTie manufacture of convertible tops is started on long cutting tables where as many as 75 single layers of material are stacked and cut. The patterns are for door sections. side panels, rear panels, top decks and carpeting. Altogether, there are 54 sewing machines, both single and double needle, and all are of the heavy-duty high-speed variety. Earnings amounted to $1.115 million or 59 cents per share, up 25 per cent over the $889,000 or 49 cents per share in 1975. Sales meantime increased to $60.1 million, up 16 per cent over the $51.6 million in the prior year. Dr. George E. Mueller, chairman and president, attributed part of the improvement to the company’s diversification program whioh has resulted in an increase in its non-military related revenues, which now account for about one half of total revenues. System Development Corp. has been active on upgrading the computer system at the North American Air Defense Command at Cheyenne Mountain. DENVER (AP) — A special study of water management in the upper Platte River Basin received the highest priority Thursday as the Missouri River Basin Commission adopted priorities for the next several years. The company has not announced major expansion plans, but Cheley says there is some thought being given to finding an expansion site. But. he adds, it will not likely be at Whitco’s current plant because of the high expense of that property. Whether the company would consider locating another plant outside the Colorado area, Chely won’t say, though he adds: “We would need to look at a number of factors— electrical needs, manpower needs, natural gas needs, water needs — and we would have to take a hard look at New Business Telephones From fix*d rot«i prior to 5/1/75, rotos now wary. And, he says, it’s a great area for driving around in a four- wheel-drive vehicle — a pastime which many employes enjoy. The biggest drawback about Colorado Springs is its distance from Whitco customers, located mostly in the Detroit area. Also, the fabric and glass which Whitco uses is sent to the plant from East Coast and Midwest points, fabricated here and then shipped back to the East. Saving on transportation costs was a principal reason Whitco set up its plant in Columbia City, closer to major steel suppliers and Whitco’s customers. ^Tiitco’s design and engineering center is run by Jim Meyer, a former Martin-Marietta engineer. Meyer’s department is responsible for designing patterns for new fabric and steel products, both for Whitco’s OEM customers and its own Rough Rider line. "We are very distinct from other manufacturers in our business." says Cheley. "We don't sell in the classic way where the auto people give you a blueprint and you go home and quote on it. We sit down with our styling, design and marketing people and we design the product, then we take it back to the customer and ask them yes or no. They give us the rough idea of w'hat they want and we go back and work on It. "We'ye always had a top priority on quality and it’s the main reason we’re recognized as number one in our segment of the industry—in size, performance and quality.’’ APARTMENTS 29 Units showing stoody 97% occupancy ovar post fiv# yoors.
