)4 THE SUN April 29, 1982 Last man in draft 'disappointed' terview. "I'm happy to be drafted by the 49ers. I think this is a good opportunity for me." Had the 49ers not drafted him, Washington might have signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent. A Dallas official was at his home Wednesday just in case he wasn't picked. Washington had hoped to be drafted between the fourth and sixth rounds "from input I got from scouts before the draft." Bui after he wasn't drafted Tuesday, he found himself "a little more relaxed.

I knew I had no control over the situation, so I decided just to see what happened." Being the notoriety that results, there's one other positive result from being chosen last in the draft Washington will be the guest of honor during Irrele-vent Week in Newport Beach. Among other things, Washington will receive the Lowsman Trophy, a statue of a player depicted dropping a football. Associated Press FRESNO Tim Washington said Wednesday he was "kind of disappointed" at being the 334th and final player picked in the National Football League draft. But Washington, a defensive back for Fresno State last year, said he probably will sign a contract with the team that chose him, the San Francisco 49ers. Washington said he cminlp nf alternatives." including feelers from Canadian Football League teams.

"But as of right now, I am going with the 49ers," he said. Washington didn't indicate much concern over the fact that the 49ers' rookie defensive backs were partially credited with the team's 1981 success, culminating in victory in the Super Bowl. "Maybe they need a defensive back for the nickel defense or something," he said in a telephone in Foster as the principal blocker on the "student body tight" pitch play. Elsewhere, senior Byron Darby has moved from outside linebacker to defensive tackle (his fourth position In four years), cornerback Joey Browner has switched to free safety, strong safety Troy West is now a starting cornerback, and Colton High School product Marvin Williams has shifted from free safety to strong safety. "Last year," said Robinson, "we needed Joey at corner because we didn't have anyone else there who could play any kind of man defense.

We should be stronger hark thprp (In thp Qprnnriflrvi this year." Williams was Ineligible for the last week of spring drills because be failed to maintain the number of academic units the NCAA requires of athletes. He'll make up the deficiency during the summer and be eligible In the fall. Tollner replaces John Jackson as offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Jackson recently left to take a position in Jerry Buss' California Sports organization. Robinson has also lost his defensive coordinator, R.C.

Slocam, who earlier this year returned to Texas AIM, whence he came to 'SC. Foster Andersen fills his position on the staff, but the Trojans will operate without a defensive coordinator this season. Onetime all Pac 10 linebacker Rlkl Gray, who didn't play last year and Is trying to come back from his third knee operation, was held out of spring practice. Robinson termed his progress "encouraging." A decision on his availability for fall will be made by Aug. 1.

Junior Vic Vaca is the starter at his inside position. Darby (sprained ankle) also sat out the spring, while promising but injury-prone sophomore fullback Michael Alo missed most of the workouts with a nee'- injury and is questionable for the fall. The "V-back" position, the flanker blocker in-motion that Robinson is credited with introducing to college football in 1979, will be de-emphasized this year. Last year's regular at the spot, John Kamana, is now a reserve fullback. Junior Scott Livingston, beaten out of the placeklcking Job last year by Steve Jordan, has transferred to Cerrltos JC Harper is unoffocially the Trojans' fastest human after clocking 4.45 in the 40-yard dash this spring.

Though not eligible for postseason games this season, the Trojans can appear on TV. The NCAA's new contract with ABC and CBS allows a team to make as many as four appearances in one year, and with a schedule that Includes Oklahoma, Notre Dame, UCLA and Arizona State, the Trojans stand a decent chance of getting maximum exposure before the TV sanctions hit in 1983. With the TV, said Robinson, "We'll have a hell of a lot to play for (despite the probation)." Robinson added that his desire to see the Trojans through what he knew would be a difficult period (because of the coming sanctions) was a factor In his decision to turn down the New England Patriots' head coaching Job in use (Continued from D-l) caught only three balls last year) and wide receivers, and, apparently, more deep throwing. Salisbury, considered the nation's best schoolboy passer two year? pv becomes USC's fifth starting QB in the last four seasons. He built himself up with offseason weight training (he gained 12 pounds), and also applied himself to the playbook so as to acquire a better working command of the offense, something he lacked last year, when he threw only 15 passes as Mazur's seldom-used backup.

"Sean really came on in the spring," said Robinson, "both in his ability to compete and his perception of how difficult it is to play his position. He has enormous potential. His future is unlimited." Robinson also wished to emphasize that the Trojans do not have a quarterback controversy. "I resent that term," he said. "Just because you have two guys battling for a job doesn't make it a controversy." Well, OK, but during the course of the Trojans' non-controversy, both Salisbury and Mazur said that they might well leave school if they didn't get the job.

Just this week, a suburban A. paper reported that Mazur would in fact be shipping out, though all parties (even Mazur's father) deny it. "The news (that he lost out) was devastating to John, naturally," said Robinson. "He's bummed out. But we have no reason to anticipate that he'll leave." Salisbury has been dropping loose talk about transferring since the end of last season, leading to speculation that Robinson hired Tollner (who recruited Salisbury for BYU) and then gave the young QB the starting job at least to placate him.

Marvin Williams moved to strong safety "What Sean said had no influence," Robinson said Wednesday. "I can't imagine anyone believing we'd be so shallow as to allow that to affect our thinking." Robinson also seemed convinced that the Trojans won't lose anyone because of the probation, despite the fact that under a new NCAA rule, any junior or senior on the USC squad could transfer to a school outside the Pacific 10 without having to sit out a year or forfeit any eligibility. "Look, if someone wants to leave, I'll pay his cab fare," Robinson said (though that would probably be an NCAA violation). "But no one's leaving. Everyone will be in school, and that includes our new recruits.

It's no problem." USC notes Robinson feels comfortable with the tailback position, in spite of Allen's graduation to the Oakland Raiders. Sophomore Fred Crotcher, an Anthony Davis clone who ran for 268 yards and a 7 44 average as Allen's principal backup last year, would start if the season opened today. But sophomore Zephrtnl Lee and Junior Michael Harper (coming off shoulder surgery) are right with him. Starting fullback Todd Spencer got a spring tryout at tailback, but was Injured early on and returned to his original position. Several others, though, will be at new stations in '82.

All-America hopeful Bruce Matthews has moved from weakside guard to strongslde guard, where he replaces first-round NFL draft choice Roy to a halt, 334 players had been taken, with Fresno State defensive back Tim Washington bringing up the rear. Texas contributed more players 12 to the draft than any other school. Penn State had 10 players drafted, eight going in the first six rounds. Michigan and Arizona State each had seven players taken, and national champion Clemson had six selected. USC and UCLA each had five players drafted.

The Trojans sent into pro ranks linebacker Chip Banks, tailback Marcus Allen, guard Roy Foster, defensive lineman Dennis Edwards and cornerback Joe Turner. The Bruins contributed Coffman, tackle Luis Sharpe, tight end Tim Wrightman and defensive linemen Martin Moss and Joe Gary. The college conference with the most players drafted was again the Pac 10, with 35. The Big Ten was second with 32, followed by the Southwest Conference (29), the Atlantic Coast (22), the Southeastern (22), the Big Eight (21) and the Western Athletic (17). Bear basketball team.

He graduated in 1978. After learning Wednesday he had been picked by the Dolphins, Jones left for Miami to take part in a rookie camp, said Jack Oksnee, Jones' backfield coach at Big Bear. "We're all pretty excited about it up here," Oksnee said by telephone. Perhaps the most prominent county player not selected was University of Redlands running back Tony Haertl, whose chances were undoubtedly hurt by a season-ending knee injury. Haertl, however, has been in contact with several NFL teams and is likely to be invited to a summer camp as a free agent.

At least three trades Wednesday are worthy of note: Cleveland sent defensive tackle Lyle Alzado and running back Greg Pruitt to Oakland in separate deals (for an eighth-round pick and future draft picks, respectively), and New Orleans gave up its final five draft picks in exchange for Washington's No.4 next year. By the time the '82 draft ground Draft (Continued from D-l) his junior year and lost 35 pounds. He seemed recovered as a senior and played well; some amateur scouts ranked him among the top five guards in the nation. The only San Bernardino County product selected in this year's draft was Big Bear's Jones, a 6-4, 265-pound guard. He was a four-year starter for coach Wayne Howard at the University of Utah and played in the Gold Bowl (a college all-star game) in San Diego last fall.

"I've been here 15 years and I know Wayne is the first from Big Bear ever to be drafted," said Martin Bumstead, assistant football coach at the high school. At Big Bear, Jones was a two-way all-De Anza League tackle as a junior and an all-CIF defensive tackle as a senior (he played fullback on offense). Jones also lettered twice as a center on the Big Off-track betting proposal advances again in state Assembly on all the kinds of bets permitted now at tracks.
