200 Walkathon to Aid March of Dimes Set Next Weekend A statewide Big Foot Walkathon for the March of Dimes has been scheduled for Saturday, March 24. In Utah County, a 20-mile walk sponsored by the Utah County Chapter will begin and end at Pioneer Park, Provo. Local officials hope to raise $25,000 from this third annual walk. They say this year's goal for the county is $40,000 in March of Dimes contributions. Last year the chapter raised just over $34,000.

Governor to Walk Guests at the Walkathon will include Gov. Calvin L. Rampton who will walk the first few blocks with the participants. Seven and one-half-year-old Marty Mim Mac, a previous national poster child also will attend along with LeeAnn Carter from Payson and Chris Peay, Orem, who are this year's poster children for the county. County, Law March is of Dimes chairman is Paul Mitchell Ream.

is campaign director and Bill Walkathon chairman. Registration forms and sponsor's sheets will be available in schools, some shopping centers and at March of Dimes Headquarters, 227 N. University Ave. Open to All Ages The walk is open to all ages. Participants under 18 years, however, must have a parent sign their sponsor sheet.

Officials say anyone may sponsor a walker. Sponsors will give 10 cents per mile and up for each mile walked by the participants they sponsor. One-quarter of the money collected by the county effort will go directly to the Medical Scientific Research Fund at National Headquarters. Half of the remaining three-quarters will stay with the chapter to finance local programs of the National Foundation. The remaining money will be forwarded to national headquarters to help support patient services, professional and public health education and other activities at the national level.

In 1972, the national foundation gave $30,000 to the Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City and $5,000 to the Intermountain Newborn Intensive Care Center in Salt Lake. Financial report for the local chapter indicates that just over $7,000 was given for research support, over $5,600 went for public health education and nearly $5,500 was donated in community services. A total of $10,560 was sent to the national foundation, and $6,000 was returned. Officials say it is a common practice to return money to new chapters. They say 1972 was the first year the Utah County Chapter functioned as a recognized organ of the national foundation.
