Bangor Daily News Thursday June 9 1988 15 two considerations in mind Waders must keep might have prevented two fishermen from going under and almost not returning alive wades should use a staff A wading staff helps provide a balance when wading on rocks or where bottom is slippery Most of all it helps one in unfamiliar water and in fairly heavy current One of the most important is that it will prevent water from flowing down into the waders if you should fall in And people do fall in If you wade to catch a fish the chances are good at some unexpected moment slip and fall onao JUNE 10-11 il tom Pori Mgto DM mwl Bean cam immim infonnatioii MepOom 1-600-31-4341 otensian 7800 or ntahL JUNE 1012 Kokidj Mmol Sunkhia Clupt TU outing Road! A near tragedy came within a whisker of 1 taking two lives on the Penobscot at the Wringer Pool A Vermont angler wearing oversized open at the top chest waders slipped into water well over his head A second fisherman shod similarly attempted to rescue the angler and like the first fisherman his waders quickly filled and dragged his head beneath the surface By a small miracle the two safely made shore and from this experience there is a lesson to be learned The wadiag fisherman must keep two important considerations in mind He must wade quietly and he must wade safely Slipping- sliding and splashing through water will not add anything to his bag Everyone can recall diving under water as a kid and knocking two rocks together so that the sound of the impact rang loud and clear thraigh Water When you grind gravel underfoot or make loud splashings you are doing the same thing The fish hear the sound and it sends them scooting CARRIED TO THE extreme careless wading can be downright dangerous for it -may lead to a fall in deep water heavy current or on rocks alongshore where the HOWEVER SINCE A wading staff can be something of an encumbrance care should be taken to choose one that is light in weight and can be attached to your per- son in such a way that if you need both hands free to play a fish for instance you can let go of the staff and it will float free1 A staff should be used on the upstream side of the wader 'The bottom end will be planted firmly in the gravel or in solid footing between rocks slightly in front of the wader Then with the legs spread comfortably the fisherman moves the foot forward a step gets it set then brings it forward He continues along the way slowly first the staff then one foot then the other I am not sure that a wading staff would have been the answer during the frightful experience at the Wringer Pool But cinching the waders tight at chest level certainly LEAD ME TO A wading angler and chances are good if totally honest admit to taking a bath The same holds for deer hunting Show me a regular on the deer paths and if the individual is honest grudgingly admit to being Lost he turned around for six seven or eight hours yes- Anyway even with an immersion of considerable time a well-cinched belt will per- mit only seepage rather than flow down into the waders A belt also helps to hold waders firmly in place to prevent rub at the knees And a belt provides wonderful support for your back on a stream or river when walking from pool to pool In addition a belt provides a handy place to stick the rod butt while tying a new leader tippet or fly A wading staff is another safety item There are many times when anyone who Bud Leavitt angler may hit his head or break an arm or a leg Chest high waders should be fitted so that with one foot on die ground you can raise the other as high as a chair seat or a reasonable step up if you are coming up the path on the bank at the Penobscot Waders that are too tight or too short are uncomfortable and hamper free movement But if the legs of your waders are too long they will rub at the inside of the legs and eventually wear through That is why a quality wader comes in foot-plus-length sizes short regular long and a few companies offer extra long Most waders come with belt loops A belt on waders serves several purposes At EddMoo 7 pjLwontfy mating Eddington
