Members of the team include front row, left to right, Harold Alley, Martin Preston, Hoping to become better acclimated for Sundays American Conference title game in Miami against the Dolphins, the Colts left Tuesday night to set up a training base in Tampa. Some of the defending Super Bowl champions claim to have run out of steam when they lost 17-14 in Miami last month, with the Dolphins scoring all their points in the final half. Before leaving Baltimore there was disagreement among the Colts on the effect of the heat but all concurred that go. ing to Florida early was well worth a try. As far as Im concerned," said tight end John Mackey, heat or anything else should not be an excuse in a big game.

Going for $8,500 and a chance to go for $15,000 more, we should be willing to play in a furnace. The only advantage in going to Florida early," Mackey said, is to get a better mental attitude about the heat. By Sunday, the sun should work all the excuses out of us, so we can concentrate on the game. After practicing there, we wont be sitting in an air conditioned room Saturday night, saying, I hope its not hot tomorrow. We can forget the heat.

Linebacker Ted Hendricks, a native of Florida, disagrees. I felt tired on the opening kickoff last time, he said. When I played at the University of Miami, the other teams said the heat didnt matter. But Notre Dame came in and we tied them 0-0, and we beat Southern Cal 10-7. Coach Don McCafferty said he figured the 75-degree temperature was a factor in last months game when he saw the Colts lying around the locker room at halftime.

You dont have to get used to cold weather," he said. Its invigorating to some people. Linebacker Ray May, who said he consumed 20 salt tablets last time, confessed to being wobbly legged in the second half, while running back Tom Matte said he saw a lot of guys sucking air. On the other hand, safety Rick Volk and offensive tackle Danny Sullivan said they werent affected. I wasnt either, offensive tackle Bob Vogel joked but, of course, Im a superbly conditioned athlete.

Wide receiver Eddie Hinton, in a slump when the Colts first met the Dolphins, said the heat didnt affect him. I didnt play until the fourth quarter, and you cant get tired on the bench. While the effects of the early Florida training wont be known until Sunday, McCafferty believes the Colts got a break with the later starting time. Thats a lot better than starting at one oclock in the boiling sun," he said. MachiasOff To Fine Start After fiismal 1970-71 Year mits raving a tough schedule, but is pleased that his Bulldogs have pulled in decisive victories over high ranking class teams in the early going.

Like most other teams the first half of the season has been a search for a starting five. Last year the Bulldogs lost two starters to the University of Maine at Machias, with the burden of leadership falling on cocaptains Robert Beal and Wayne St. Pierre. Beal, who tops the 6-foot mark is averaging 10 points as a senior in the five MACHIAS The Machias Bulldogs, coming up from an 0-18 record last year, have established a 2-3 record and have taken a grip on eighth place in the unofficial class ratings in Eastern Maine. Coach David McLaughlin ad Statistics often lie.

A football team can excel in about everything but the final score. A basketball team can take 100 shots and hit only 25 per cent. But they are revealing in more ways than one. Take the latest basketball cage stats from National Collegiate Sports Services. The Individual scoring figures go through December 18 while team stats include games through December 21.

Starting with the latter, UCLA leads the list in team offense with a 4-0 record, 438 points and an average of 109.5. UCLA also leads in rebounds with 255 and an average of 63.8; and in average scoring margin of 63.8 defensively to go with 109.5 on offense for a margin of 45.7. But in individual scoring statistics through 42 positions not a UCLA player is listed. Indicating the excellent point balance of the Bruins. This isnt anything new.

The clubs of John Wooden are noted for point balance and in the previous five years his record is 145-5, so he must have the answer, or at least part of it. His teams do have $tars but actually any one of the starters is a star in his own right. He won five straight national championships. The University of Maine team gets back in business next week with back-to-back games against St. Michaels and Vermont, at Burlington.

The Bears are back practicing after their 1-3 road trip and while they dropped from first to 11th in team defense (listed for five games) Marshall University (7-0) is ranked fourth in team offense, and Oral Roberts (5-1) 17th. Marshall is fourth in scoring average margin and tied for first in won-lost percentage of 7-0, along with Virginia. Rich Fuqua of Oral Roberts is seventh in scoring with an average of 27.6 in five games and while Maines Peter Gavett isnt listed in the free-throw leaders hes second in field goal percentage for six games at .712. Since these stats were listed UCLA has played, and won, one more game, and Maine has played two. Getting back to UCLA, the team with five better-than-average scorers fares much better than a club with one or two key pointmen.

Something Wooden has known for a long time In a side note with the NCSS stats is an another Interesting item, mention of something that seemed inevitable: When OrallRoberts University faced Hofstra in New York, the presidents of the two Universities met. Oral Roberts and Clifford Lord. Face Bruins Tonight games played. St. Pierre is the teams high scorer with 18.6 points.

St. Pierre, Peter Buck and Bruce Stevens are the other juniors starting. The only freshman starter on the roster is Harolci Alley, who has averaged 10 points in spite of his 5-6 stature Stevens, a 6-1 center weighing 216 pounds, has scored 38 points and Peter Buck is credited with 43 markers Others slated to see more ac tion as the second phase of the basketball season gets into full swing, are 6-3 senior David Hilt, who shares the center spot with Stevens, and sophomores Mitchell Look and Tim Gross. Martin Preston, one of only three seniors on the club, has played ing with Bobby is a big change I parts of all five games, figur-from playing with others. In the last 10 games, Martin has scored seven goals and his total of 13 could produce a 30-goal season.

CHICAGO (AP) As a middleman, Pit Martin is helping the Chicago Black Hawks become the centers of attraction in the National Hockey League. As a matter of fact, the Bobby Hull-Martin-Chico Maki trio currently is one of the hottest lines in the NHL, taking a 10-game cluster of 48 points against the Boston Bruins Wednesday night in Chicago Stadium. During that span, Golden Jet Hull has slapped in 13 goals, leaving Bobby only three behind the. current season total of 28 by league scoring leader Phil Esposito of the Bruins. Center Martin, who came to the Hawks in the 1967 deal that sent Esposito from behind the shadow of Hull to Boston glory, face a heavy schedule in both class and with the next game coming up tonight against Shead at Eastport.

The Machias losses have been at the hands of George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill in the opening game of the season; 53-63 to the Jonesport-Beals Royals; and a surprising 53-70 defeat by Lubec on Dec. 14. The victories came over Washington Academy and Narraguagus. Coach McLaughlin sees his team still capable of upsetting any of the class teams. The next class team to face Machias will be Woodland on January 8 at Woodland.

The Shire-town squad will be trying preventanupsct. terno said, referring to the brilliant Penn State quarterback of a decade ago. If these players were healthy (Phillips, Burrisk and Gaspard) Texas had a great chance of beating Oklahoma, and an even better one of beating Arkansas. has returned to the spot where he most obviously belongs. Thats between Hull and Maki where his great breaking speed and scoring potential helped catapult Hull in the 1968-69 season to his.

ten-record 58-goal peak. Four weeks ago, an injury to Jim Pappin, right winger on the line with Martin and Danny OShea, prompted coach Billy Reay to shift Pit to center between Hull and Maki. Reay termed it a move of necessity, but conceded, Ive been aching to have Martin on the line with Hull and Maki. Three guys who can skate like that put tremendous pressure on the opposition." That certainly has been re fleeted in the West Divisionleading Black Hawks surge to all kinds of current skeins of accomplishment. Against the Bruins Wednesday night, the Hawks take an overall unbeaten string of 10 games; eight straight victories, and an unbeaten home ice run of 15 triumphs and two ties.

The Hawks own home unbeaten record was 18 last season and the NIILs longest is 28 by Montreal stretching over the 1943 and 1944 seasons. With Hull blooming as a superb team player, the skill and speed of Martin has been Pit takes a load off both Hull and Maki, because the op position has to regard Martin just as dangerous with his great skating and fine shot, said Reay. Sports In Brief Paterno insisted at an informal news conference with writers who have followed his teams for years that the Nittany Lions are not ready for a team the caliber of Texas and he isnt sure they will be by game time New Years Day. As of now weve got a lot of problems, said a dour Paterno. Weve got to play the best game weve -played since Ive been head coach and were not ready for it.

Paterno sounded so pessimistic that one reporter asked if Penn State would show up. The team will, he retorted, then flashed a weak smile at his weak joke. This doesnt sound like you Joe, another writer said to the Penn State coach. Ive never you so pessimistic. Im telling you exactly how Though a week separates the it is now, Paterno answered.

Rockets Cut Squad To 10 DENVER (AP) Veteran forwards Julian Hammond and Steve Mix were placed on waivers Tuesday by the Denver Rockets of the American Bas-ketbaU Association as Coach Alex llannum cut his squad to 10 players.
