John Marsh, who ia circulating the petition asking the City Council to order an election for the purpose of extending the boundaries of the city, states that he has thus far secured the names of over 600 electors.

Many of these have large property interests entaide of the present boundaries and represent the sentiment of people who live in the territory sought to be Mr. Marsh thinks that there will be no serious objection fiom that section. The petition will probably contain upwards of 3000 names before it is presented to tbe Council. There is no difficulty in getting names, and Mr. Marsh says he has yet to hear a refusal or even an ordinary objection to the proposed annexation.

Apain the mnsic'i heat: Some stately march thrills through my eaperear. And in the distance once again I hear The roll of drums, the tramp of martial feet! And then some simple air, Some well remembered ballad, soft and low; Somepoet'a offering from his full heart's Some world sick mortal's last despairing prayer. No matter what the theme When that soft touch falls on the williDg-keya. Or sad, or joyous, it is sure to please. And Ah! too briefly soothes life's fevered dream.

First: the rapid crease of business since our opening, less uian a year ago, compeis us to carry a stock of goods too laiafefor the present capacity of our shelves, and we have determined to make extensive alterations and additions at an early day, which will give ns more room. Secondly, we have a lartre stock of spring and summer goods ordered, and we to close out as much of our fall and winter goods as possible before the new stock arrives, and to accomplish this end we will 'give the above discount daring tke month. We are aware that the ptfblic have been deceived so often bv the so called '-clearance sales" ana "closing oat sales" that they do not place much confidence in them, but as we have made it a point not to advertise impossibilities, and so do just what; we promise to, our patrons will find this not an at tern pt to deceive them, but a genuine sale, made necessary by the reasons above given. Bear in mind, 10 per cent od on ail purchases. J.

tWa Aaatk nf ka. and when Maud was about 13 years old. my father sent her to board in the Catholic Home at Vallejo, paying lib-eiaiiy for her tuition and her care. The child was always vicious and an-coDtrohable. Her mind was in some way aiSected.

and generally she was considered partially idiotic She had rot been with the sisters at Vallejo long before we heard bad reports, ot her. She ran away three times, and each time was foaud in the low haunts at Vallejo. The sisters, after her third escapade, notified father that they could keep her no longer, and she was sent home. Deeming the ranch no place for the child, who needed a mother's care, correspondence was opened and she was sent to an seminary. Here her waywardness a train caused trouble, aniKSe authorities of the seminartft her oh board "train an-aMiX er home.

Oa sVaneh the child told some 5 about her treatment, nae, Mr. Maxwell said, Mrs. 4S living at the ranch, and at tion the child was entrusted they were sent to Oakland At. Maxwell paying their ex-j Nothing more was heard of except to send them raonev ilarlv, until it was learned that the iteoT-Mrs. Meredith's husband in county had never been brought to ii al settlement, and that an effort was einp made by certain parties, who Mr.

Maxwell refused to name, to have themselves appointed guardian of Maud. Ir was then that E. Ia- Maxwill step-! red ia. He sent District Attorney i Tomer of Sat. Luis Obispo to Oakland to cunt np tne cnua, ana on nis return had him appointed guardian of the es- tate and person of' Maud and her two sisters by Maxwell br.

Then the proceedings had in the cont in this city were commenced, as related in yesterday's Union, "The onlv object I had in the matter," said Mr. Maxwell, "was to protect the interests of my two little stepsisters? and see that designing persons do not obtain possession ot little Maud's estate, which consists of a hall interest in pueblo lot 1121, in this city, and a half interest in the old Meredith ranch in the Cajon. She cannot read nor write." THE POSTOFFICE. InTor tiaa. to the Government Authorities About the Oakland Puotofflc Jn reply to a letter from the Supervising Architect of the Postal Department, Banna has the, following letter I 1.

The amount of floor space now oo-ctipied by this office is 3700 square feet. 2. This space is altogether insufficient for the present business and should be increased by not less than 1300 feet: that is, the building is 37 feet wide by iwyaJsngta, and it should be 50 feet "-iide. 'With such an enlarged room there would, no doubt, be sufficient space to accommodate the present business of the office, bat at tbe fast rate of increase, the business having more than doubled since 181, it would soon require more commodious quarters. 3.

In ten years the business of the office has more than trebled in volume, and from a city of 60,000 population at present has every prospect of numbering 150.WOO 200,000 within the next ten years. 4. The number of. in thii tiiSce is fony-two. 5.

The amount of annual rent paid for the premises now occupied by the 1 ostotlice is $1200, and for a place as centrally located as this it is liable to trebled in expense or. even more sitlin the next ten years. 6. 1 believe there "are no other Fed--ji offices at present located ia Uus ciift 7. It was formerly proposed and en-thu5iastieally favored by many of the bef citizens that the city should donate to the Government, for thfrerection of a suitable buitdine for the Postoffice, an extremelv eligible site on what is known VStv Hall Park, fronting on two )iid tbe most centrally located raid be at preseut possible to situated near tlie junction ot seveoal lines of street cars, and in the heart of the city, and the general pinion is that this" donation would still be made.

Outside of this location I am informed, by prominent real estate dealers, that the cost of a suitable sit would be from $300 to $1200 per fronr foot, according as it was more or let centrally located, and a site as centr and as favorable as the one proposed to be donated eould not be purchased for less than $1200 per front foot.
