Knights of Columbus He retired from St Regis Paper Co in Bucksport after 38 years of service He was a member of the United Pa-permakers Union He is survived by his wife Jennifer (Murphy) Quirion of 1926 son of Adonia and Rose Amee Cus-teau Thibeault He was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Navy He was formerly employed for many years at Waterville High School as a business education teacher and was also an instructor in driver education at the high shool He was a communicant of St John the Baptist Church Winslow a member of NEA-MTA and a member of the Kennebec Valley Retired Teachers Association He was a former president of the Maine State Drivers Education Association and a member of Toastmasters International He was also a member of the VFW post in Winslow He is survied by his mother of Biddeford his wife Claire (Hanna) Thibeault of Winslow three sons Thomas of Austria David of Augusta and John of Hampden a daughter Claire Marie Martin of Boston three step-daughters Aug 1 1987 at his residence in Orano after a long illness He was born in Orono Feb 2 1916 the son of Prof Lucius and Annie (Moore) Merrill and was a life-long resident of Orono Prof Merrill was a graduate of Orono High School Class of 1933 a graduate of the University of Maine Class of 1938 with a B5 Degree in Chemistry He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Prof Merrill was a veteran of World War II where he was a First Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corp US Army station in the Phillipines He was a professor of Biochemistry for 41 years at the Agricultural Experiment Station of Orono He retired in 1979 and had worked as a food chemist including extensive research with vitamins and food analysis Prof Merrill was a member of the National Food and Drug Association He was an active member and past president of the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis International and was chairman of the second annual Kiwanis Auction Prof Merrill was instrumental in the construction of the Nickerson Swimming Pool Orono and oversaw the operation of the pool for 15 years He was a lector Eucharistic minister and also first chairman of the Parish Council at the Newman Center Catholic Church Orono Prof Merrill was a great lover of music a distinguished baritone and sang at local weddings and events He was a member of Mainely Music Chorus of Barbershop Harmony Surviving are his wife Lillian (Chretien) Merrill of Orono three sons and daughters-in law Edward pnd Connie Merrill of Portland Alan and Arlene Merrill of Epping NH David and Rhonda Merrill of Lakeville Mass three OAKFIELD Lester Sanders 50 died Aug 1 1987 at Oakfield Funeral arrangements (will be announced by Bowers Funeral Home Island Falls BURKE CHANDLER SOUTH PARIS Burke Chandler 82 formerly of 76 Old Point Ave Madison died Aug 2 1987 at the Market Square Health Care facility in South Paris where he had resided the past years He was born in Madison June 29 1905 the eldest son of the late Chauncey and Flora Burke Chandler He received his education in the public schools of Madison and graduated from Madison High School in 1924 He was a graduate of the Maine School of Commerce in Portland In 1927 he entered the Post Office Department as a substitute clerk carrier and in 1930 recevied appointment as a regular city carrier This position he held until 1944 when he resigned to assume ownership of a fuel yard which had been operated by his father-in-law the late Walter Hilton After sale of the business three years later he was associated with Edwards Funeral Home of Madison for several years Mr Chandler was married Oct 6 1930 to the former Edna Ellen Hilton of Anion who died May 29 1977 He was a past grand of Indian Spring Lodge No 115 of Madison and served as its secretary from 1942 until 1958 He received his Grand Lodge degree in 1933 and served as district deputy gand master in 1938 and 1939 He joined Rocky Point Encampment of North Anson transferring to Parmenas Encampment of Skowhegan which he served as chief patriarch in 1934 and 1935 later transferring to Old Point Encampment of Madison He joined Canton Worumbus of Auburn in 1926 being employed there at the time of the construction of the Gulf Island Dam as a storekeeper transferring to Canton Somerset of Skowhegan which he served as chaplain in 1931 He was a past grand master of the Grand Lodge IOOF of Maine a past grand patriarch of the Grand Encampment IOOF of Maine and was a past department commander and brigadier general retired of the Patriarchs Militant IOOF of Maine and was recipient of the Grand Decoration of Chivalry He was a past grand representative to the Sovereign Grand Lodge IOOF of the World He is survived by two sons Douglas Walter Chandler of Fairfield Conn and Eugene Chandler of Mechanic Falls and five grandchildren His brother Eugene predeceased him Visiting hours will be held at the Raymond Funeral Home 5 Dwinal St Mechanic Falls on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Odd Fellows rolled over at least twice Her son Steven See ofProvidence was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor late Friday and was pronounced dead several hours after arrival Dahl was in stable
