Yesterday afternoon the Greenhood and Moran Club of Oakland gained an- other victory, but unfortunately it does not count on the record of regular league games, because the game was not played with a league club.

The game was with the Salt Lake Club. In the seventh inning Cahili was put in to r4tch. relieving Anderson. The score then stood 8 to 1 and in the three final innings the Mormons made six runs, but were still defeated. The score is as i GBEE5H00D AFD MORAS I MAXES.

The run of The raymanler at the Star Theater has been marked by a ludicrous episode, in which O'Sullivan Dimpfel, the husband 3f the Baltimore society lady who is a member of the company, is the chief actor.

It is claimed'that Mr. Dimpfel is connected with the bluest blood of Maryland.while in physique he is a Fred May, being of athletic build and six feet three inches in statore. Mr. Dimpfel started in on the amusement of painting things carmine behind the scenes at the Star Theater on last Saturday night. It is said that ever since the engagement at the Star Mr.

Dimpfel has made himself coiispienous about the house, and he has been denied admittance at the stage door. These rebuffs ruflled his temper, and on several occasions he has come near being subjected to police discipline in utterly disregarding the rules of a metropolitan theater. On the evening in question it is alleged that Mr. JJnupfel presented himself at the stage door, and on being refused admittance as usual he threatened to mop up the sidewalk with the doorkeeper. After a struggle he managed to pass in as far as the stage.

Here the burly form of Duncan B. Harrison loomed up and barred Mr. Dim pf el's turther progress. i The latter took the star into his confidence and stated that he was going in to see his wife. Mr.

Harrison Immediately entered an emphatic protest against this and, during the interview, be wrenched a large pistol out of Mr. Dimpfel's hand. The star' confiscated the gun as a trophy of the encounter. The two men then clinched and struggled on the stage, when a happy thought struck Mr. Harrison the tank.

It was conveniently adjacent, and the idea was no sooner conceived than it was executed by Mr. Harrison, whe hustled his man to the edge and incontinently dumped him into the water. A splash, a loud yell, and a sprawling, dripping figure emerged from the tank and reclined against some scenery to dry. The curtain rang up, and Mr. Harrison went on as "The Paymaster" as cool and impurturbable as though nothing had disturbed his serenity.

After Mr. DimpfePs raiment had somewhat dried he was put in a cab and sent to his hotel. Strug Stories of Life on tho Stags in Oiler PUcei Duncu Uh for the Talk. Gilbert and Sullivan are becoming more dignified as the weight of years pulls down the frolics of their satire.

One of Sullivan's first works of i.n-portance, however, was an oratorio, and it may be that be is only returning to the graver themes of the time when dignity mast be assumed. There never was a secret better kept than the new opera title, music, and libretto. The title is the Yeoman of the Guard; or tU Merry Man and hi Maid. There are two acts, as in the other of Gilbert and Sullivan's operas, and there is but one scene. In one act the Tower of London is seen by sunlight, and in the other is eeen by moonlight.

In both masic and dialogue there is little satire and but little humor. The plot is not new. In fact there is flavor of The Mikado in it. In the first act "Phoebe" sits at a spinning wheel in a yard adjoining the lower, singing a song of a maiden in love and bewailing her fate. "Colonel Fairfax'- is condemned to be beheaded Sot sorcery.

A guard of fifty yeomen or beefeaters rush on the stage and ng a spirited chorus, their scarlet and gold costumes, with the sheen of their silvered spears, making a brilliant picture. "Colonel Fairfax" has twice eaved the life of 'Tha-beV father in battle, and both she and her father want to save his neck, but how? The opportunity offers through a brother of Phcebe," who has jast been appointed a yeoman of the guard for a valorous deed, and who is persuaded to hide and Jet the condemned man take his place as a yeoman. "Fairfax" is brought in," and the prisoner, bold and brave, sings 4oe of the best songs in the opera, in which he declares his readiness to die. Before he goes to prison he has one request to make. He has a nobleman cousin who has arranged a-plot for his death, so that the property might fall into his cousin's A strolling singer by the name of Elsi9 Mavnard comes along with a man in the disguise of a jester, and for the consideration of a bnndred crowns she consents to marry Fairfax blindfolded, provided be is executed as soon as the ceremony is performed.

She marries without looking at him (the man who is about to lose his bead), and then the problem arises to get Fairfax out of the cell and put a yeoman's uniform on him, as was intended by Phoebe's brother, rhoebe manages this by stealing the keys from "Willred fchadboult, the spoony jailer and assistant tonpentor, who is in love with her. This man is the funnv character of the opera. In getting the kevs from him Pboeoe sings the most tunelal Bong in the opera; one sure to get into the hand organ repertoire. "Fairfax" gets out after the wedding and takes his place with the yeomen. The head executioner comes on with a horde of picturesque people in quaint sixteenth centnry costumes to behead the prisoner, but he is not there, and the chorus sets up a melodious howl.

The curtain drops on a beautiful tableau with the grim executioner, ax in liand, waiting at the block for his victim. Sullivan's splendid finale to this act is loudly praised by the critics. In the second act one begins to see something of Gilbert's satirical burlesque. The beef eaters are looking for "Fairfax" and cannot find him, though lie joins them in the search. Meanwhile he finds time to make violent love to who has no idea that he is the man she married.

This is exposed mainly through the macninations of Dame Caruthers," who is the ancient maiden anxious to marry "Phu.be's''-father. He silences her by a promise of marriage, and before much more trouble happens "Phtebe's' brother arrives with a pardon for "Fairfax," And all ends well. THE OAKXaSD THEATER.
