Successful Workinir of tne System in Oakland. 1 The special delivery system went into operation at the Oakland Postoffice this morning, and so.

far everything works like charm. Eight messengers be employed in the special delivery have been appointed by Postmaster-General W. F. Vilas for the Oakland Postoffice. These men are already kept busy.

The first letter with the a special delivery stamp on it this mornirg was a "drop" letter for L. T. FarrL It was deposited in ths office at 0:40 o'-d)ck and delivered at No. .2209 Teh-graph avenue at 7:15 o'clock. The first litter received from point outside tha city was a letter for Miss Marian iwards, from San Francisco.

This letter was received at ,6:45 and delivered at the cerner of Twelfth and Linden streets at 7:03. Many other letters were received with thie special stamp affixed from San Fraoci-do, San Bernardino, Reno, Sacramento, Santa Barbara and other points. Tbee letters were also immediately delivered. This system of immediate delivery will evidently largely cut into the work -now dlooe by the American District Telegraph Messenger boys, as the expense is less aud the service more prompt. Even frorh towns and villages where there i.s no free delivery' the letters may be sent with the1 special stamp affixed and be delivered at once.

Science Monthly, Dr. Taylor states that "death from hanging appears to take, place rapidly and without causing any suffering to the Prof. Tidy; also speaks of the painless nature of death from hanging; while Prof, llaughton, in his paper read before the surgical society! of Dublin, says that "the old system of taking a convict's life by suffocation is painful, unnecessarily prolonged and revolting to those whose duty it ia ta be present." Those who epeak of the painless nature if death by strangulation arrive at this conclusion from the fact that many cases of suicide are not completely suspended, and that if they wished they could easily relieve the constriction by assuming the erect posture, and in other cases of recovery from attempted enieide by hanging, there 19 no recollection of any suffering. It should be remembered, however, that there is a great deal of difference 'between the mental attitude of the suicide and one who is about to suffer the extreme penalty of the law. In the former case he is regardless, and per-haus also not very sensitive, of a little suffering, while in the latter: every nerve braced op to resist-the inevitable result Moreover, ia these cases of, recovery the loss ot recollection cf suffering does not prove that hero was none.
