An 'excellent programme has been prepared and scores of athletes are in training for the competition.

i 5 Cook, the Captain of the Bay Citys, is hard at work training at Springfield, Illinois. The races come off next month. The Oakland wheelmen had a run yesterday to Hay wards and back. The roads down to San Leandro and Haywardn are in a rough condition compared with what tbey were a 1 month or so ago. I Cook is the smallest man of ths notable riders at Springfield, but be hopes to cap ture at least one prize.

The Oakland wheelmen will have a run next month, to which they intend inviting the city clubs, lhe date is not yet set. Twelve of the Oakland wheelmen had a spin down to Hay wards and back, yester day. Moonlight riding is becoming more popular of late amoug' the cyclists, and on one occasion last week bait a dozen of these "moonshiners" turned out. 1 Mr. Garter, the young man who came down from Red BiuS in four days on his bicycle, was out riding a short while ago with Cook, the champion of the coast.

Garter put on an extra spurt, which, owing to a loose tire, resulted in a catastrophe. One header was aaken yesterday, at least there was only one officially reported, Sunday was "loafing day" for the Mos ouito fleet, the yawls Mosquiio, Muttic, iionita and Hippie being the only ones out The Dawn has returned from a trip to Santa Cruz. The 'owner of the Emerald has gone to Alaska, but she is still kept in commis sion, i Commodore Harrison, of tire Frolic, has postponed his trip to Lurope. The Chiqueta is laid up for repairs. The early laying up of the Catco is said to be due to the Doc's feeling unwell.

The Idle Hour is expected to go into commission this week. The San Francisco Yacht Club had a fish at Angel Island last Saturday; they were afterwards to proceed to California city, and wind up Sunday with a clam chowder. The U. S. coast survey steamer Mc-Arthur has left her mooring in the Ala.

held an informal meeting on their gang. Each member did his best to stand on his ear, but was always frustrated is bis diabolical designs. Two members went in swimming from their canoes; one canoeist upon getting into a canoe that he had not tried before remarked, "Oh! she is as steady as a rock, and immediately accidentally capsized to prove his statement. A regular business meeting of. the O.

C. will be held Wednasday evening at r. 11. at their boat house, all members are specially requested to be present as busi ness of great Importance will bs discussed, THS DIAMOND FIELD. At the Oakland Baseball Grounds, yes terday afternoon, the Greenhood Morans defeated the Vallejo Red Stockings for the second time.

The attendance was un usually laree and the enthusiasm un bounded, lhe home team played a bril liant game, especially Harris, whose short stopping was a feature of the game. Both pitchers were very effective, but Hull was somewhat wild at times, aud did not re ceive good support behind the bat. Van Haltern gave Onrnett excellent Support as did also Ryan on first. Hall, the left handed pitcher of the Vallejo club, made a very tavorable impression in this game, but his superfluous movements madeth context very tedious, sod but eight innings were played. I he alleio nine are still the opinion that with Carroll, of the Fio neers.

IS 85 The Cause of Ireland- The Irish people have at last adopted the risht coarse fur relief from the -oppressions of the English landlords and the British. Government. It is to act through Parliament, combining with the men or party who will give relief to Ireland, and beat the Ministry which proves untrue to their promises.

It is expected with proper financial assistance, to return eighty members to Parliament' in the coming election favorable to the Irish cause. For this purpose Irieh- Amerlcans, and all who love jastice and. hate' oppression, are called upon to contribute to the election fund, i This is thezri riant i course. to nnrane. a course- which will meet with the approval of all right-thiakinz men who rtcqgaiza the oppressed condition of the people of Ire- land.

j.The resort to dynamite fey a few cranka claiming to3e. the leaders of Irish opinion, has done a world of injury to the Irish cause, and has disgusted those who would have responded to a call for help in a legitimate way, The enlightened sentiment -oi the world revolts at the very mention of dynamite. Those outlaws who resort to the murderous explosives, aimed at friend i and foe, the innocent and guilty alike, should be denounoed byevery true friend of the Irish cause. They are tho enemies, in fact, of the very cause' they, claim to aid. There is a legitimate way to pursue for the accomplishment of relief, and Parnell is pursuing that 'liegitjmate way.

If he cn succeed in his plan of returning eighty members to Parliament, ha will be in a position to command the situation, for he can at any time oust the present misistry should it prove reoreant to the welfare of the Irish people. Eighty members elected upon this isue would be a gain of fifty for the cause of Ireland, and the fighting of the battle in Parliament; instead of by dynamite and, boycotting, would gain for that cause the moral if not the pecuniary aid, of every lover of freedomjaod just government. The present Ministry seem inclined, to favor the Irish cause; and, placed in the powe of Par NELL and his colleagues, they will be forced to act justly and deal fairly. The plan of Tarnell receives the endorsement of the people generally tof this country, and will receive their Bym-pathies and aid. Lethe people of Ireland show that they are capable of self-government, by discontinuing outrages and dynamite, and work unitedly to carry out the plans of Parnell, and the time is not far distant when they will aeeure that-for which they are contend- ing, ia a legitimate and legal way.

The New York gokt speculators are raising heaven and earth to stop the ooioaga of silver. They have a Califor- nia lumber dealer who, furnishes codso-latioa to the gold bugs by decrying the coinage of silver, and -they just boom this lumber dealer's nonsense as conclusive evjdeuca that California is opposed to tha silver dollar coinage. The fact is, the people of this State are in favor of the double standard, and this lumber dealer simply voices the opinion of one man, and that man is 'himself. The gold bugs fear the President has forsaken them, and they are in a state of general affliction. A gTTTT JL If is becoming evident, as time progresses, that the Panama ship canal is destined to prove a gigantic failure.

The French people re beginning to lose confidence in the scheme, and the result it a serious decline in canal stock. four-fifths of the capital stock has been exhausted and only one-fifth of the work done, and that the easiest and leas difficult. Now is the time to push the Nicaragua scheme. That route can be put in effective operation long before he Panama route cam be finished, if finished at all. i In Concord Patriot says that Samuel Bowles, editor of the Springfield Republican, and third in "the line: of the 'same name, was presented by hs wife with a son last week, who will also be named Samuel, and ia expected to succeed to the editorship of the Republican if he lives.

Th cholera 'epidemic in Europe will have a tendency to keep Americans at home, and instead of "a trip to Europe, many will no doubt come to California to view scenery that excel anything oh the continent of Europe, and enjoy a climate that exoele any other on the face of the earth. Eastern people are discov ering the fact that no country in the world approaches California for winter residence.
