The first came in the fourth inning, when Morrison sped into the foul territory behind the home dugout to catch Pablo Rivera's pop fly for the third out of the inning, stranding Padres on first and third.

Morrison got to the ball just a split-second before first baseman Rod Clark and second baseman Don Stearns, both of whom had come over to help. Morrison made his second big defensive play of the night in the sixth inning, when he raced back to the warning track in right to haul in Bill Cooper's long fly ball. Morrison is a very recent addition to the Spirit roster, joining the team just last Saturday. Although he is the youngest member of the roster, this is the fourth year in the minor leagues for Morrison, who is under contract to the Toronto Blue Jays. Needless to say, Spirit manager Rich Dauer was pleased with his right fielder's performance Friday, but he also admitted that he was a bit shocked by the quickness of the 5-foot-ll, 200-pounder.

"I was impressed with his running in right, and I think he played a great defensive game," Dauer said. At the plate, Morrison cuts an impressive figure. His deep cuts, which often result In a spin when he misses, make no effort to hide his intentions to send the ball over the fence. He has set 35 home runs as his goal this season. After the game, Spirit coach Stan Sanchez summed up Bamm Bamm's performance well.

"Looks like he's going to play every day," said Sanchez. By DAVID BRISTOW Sun Sports Writer SAN BERNARDINO If anyone could be called a hero in the San Bernardino Spirit's California League opener Friday night, Brian "Bamm Bamm Morrison is a likely candidate. Morrison, the Spirit's starting right fielder, had an exemplary night on both offense and defense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored, and added two fine catches in right field in the Spirit's 5-2 victory over the Reno Padres. "I was pumped up for this game," said Morrison. "I've never played for a team that had this many fans before." Many in the crowd of more than 3,000 definitely thought Bamm Bamm was hero material, showering him with autograph requests and congratulatory remarks as he stood with the rest of the squad on Fiscalini Field after the game.

Morrison, batting cleanup in the Spirit batting order, scored the first run in the history of the franchise in the fourth inning, getting on with a single and crossing the plate on third baseman Vince Shinholster's triple. Morrison then drove in the team's fifth and final run when he scored shortstop Leon Baham with a single in the seventh. "I think I played real well," said Morrison. "Usually, the only fans I get at a game are my parents, but tonight was a great opportunity for me because of all these great people."
