He also wounded a guard, Montreal police said they picked up a suspect several hours later in the slayings of the four men. He was being held on a coroners warrant, he opened fire at about 3:30 d.m. jOf, police said. As the employes were cleaning up the placd after closing for the night, a suspect went in and with a .22 caliber gun asked the employes to go into a large refrigerator," the police spokesman said.

When they got inside, he shot them, arid while coming back out again, shot a security guard. It was the security guard who said. A police spokesman said the gunman was known to his victims and was apparently a former security guard. Police said they knew of no motive for the shootings, but speculated they could have been a vengeance killings. "LSr They say some businessmen in Presque Isle are worried about the bypass the state is going to build around the city, fearing that cash registers may not ring as often.

Maybe they ought to talk to a few of their friends in Caribou, who have already been through the experience. Incidentally, the figures that a bypass to the west of Presque Isle, would serve the most vehicles directly. yJ.fr The State Highway Commission had 750,000 of its official maps printed in Boston this year at a cost of -about a nickel apiece. 1 When 1-95 gets two moreIanes up to where you can see Mount Katahdin late this decade, theyll be 30 feet higher than the present ones (which will then be j' for northbound traffic). That will give travelers even a view of Mount Majestic.

A scenic turnout and -picnic area are planned about 7 Vi miles north of 1 Medway, where traffic averages about 2,465 vehicles 'every 24 hours. The beautiful mountain is only 24 air miles away from this spot. ylfr Construction will start in November on the new $875,000 bridge on Route 1 in Monticello (population which is to take about two years to complete. The temporary bypass will be on the west side, but no traffic is to be diverted until spring. A feature of the project is that vehicles an the bridge (30 feet higher than the present one) wont lose sight of cars on Main Street.

Eight-hundred-foot approaches are to be on the couth end and 44 on the north. Curb-to-curb distance i.will be 28 feet, with one sidewalk. The new bridge -will be 55 feet above the bed of the north branch of the Meduxnekeag River. Other facts: Only two families on either end must be moved; there will be three spans; and the present bridge is 54 years old and was widened sin 1932. I Had an interesting chat two days before the primary with Abbott Otto Greene of Columbia, who was seeking Bill Hathaways seat in Congress.

I learned he is no stranger to the county, having served as a captain at Loring from 1962 to 1964, when he lived at Parkhurst Siding. Was glad to find Abbotts not really an orthodox Republican, as he worked for Ed Muskie in 1954 and speaks very highly of Hathaway. A flier since 1956, he figures hes spent at least 9,000 hours (4,500,000 miles) in the air, is paid about $39,000 as a pilot for TWA, and works only ten days a month. If in Congress, his salary would be but $3,500 a year more. Win or lose on the 19th, he said, Guess Ill stick around politics the rest of my life.

Appropriately, Abbott and his wife were driving a bright green car. After finding out much the state didnt learn from Fred Vahlsings recent appearance in Augusta, I 'was tempted to ask again the eight questions posed in this' column May 8 and the 15 more May 15. The best newspaper account I read of the show was Don Hansens delightful one in the Portland Press Herald I headlined Fred Leaves Them Weaving at Capital Hearing. BY TERRY ST. PETER NEWS Presque Isle Bureau CARIBOU While people in many Maine communities wish they had more physicians avail able to them and in the midst of a recognized national doctor shortage this northern Maine city has established a healthy record of attracting new physicians in the past three years.

In that period of time, through the concentrated effort of the hospital board of directors, the medical staff, and the Chamber of Commerce, seven new medical doctors have begun practice in Caribou, and two more are due here this summer. Even so, Cary Memorial Hos pital administrator Clayton Harrington admits we dont have that many more than were practicing in the city years ago. While the new doctors have come, others have gone into retirement. This is the dilema facing many Maine communities Many health-related people say they need additional physicians now; others look at the ages of exhting physicians and are concerned about replacing them in the future. Few, if any, have had the influx of new doctors that Caribou has had.

Since 1956, we recognized that the problem is not just the number of doctors, but the age of the physicians, says Dr. Daniel Hanley of Brunswick, executive of the Maine Medical Association. Dr. Hanley points out that the MMA has attacked the problem with a three-pronged approach: recruitment of young people to medical schools, financial aid for medical education, and as sfttance in doctor placement. Most any community In Maine can use more physicians, Dr.

Hanley notes, and the MMA has established a priority list of 58 communities, having trimmed it from an original list of 96. The MMA has a $27,000 fund which is distributed among 40 students from Maine who are attending medical schools. When the aid and recruitment program began, there were 55 or 56 Maine students in medical training; now there are 100 under the MMA program, Hanley reports. Despite this increase, the needed supply of physicians is not being met by current trends. The number of openings is far greater than the number (of doctors) we have, Hanley comments.

Also under consideration was a temporary, 30-day freeze on food prices at the retail level. The commission irritated the Whit House by allowing Its recommendations to be re leased publicly, deepening a rift that has opened in recent months. Nixon on Thursday an. nounced he was considering temporarily lifting meat-import quotas as weU as taking additional action to tighten price controls.

But the President indicated that he would make the decision on what to do about the food-price situation. I speak on the record when. I think I should and I wont speak on the record when I think I shouldnt, Grayson said. Even other staff members and commissioners who are usually talkative refused to say anything about the meeting. Grayson even had no comment when asked why he refused to talk.

I think this is the time for no comment, he said. The commission met for four hours behind closed doors. Contrary to an announcement last week, top staff members were allowed to sit on the meeting.
