SOMERSET Bangor Daily June 26, 1972 Kings Column Four Slain By Gunman In Montreal Caribou Halts Drain Of Doctors Delicatessen, but the gunmajt called police and told them he pending an investigation, police MONTREAL (UPI)-A man BY TERRY ST. PETER NEWS Presque Isle Bureau CARIBOU While people in Neiges Shopping Center before he opened fire at about 3:30 a.m. EDT, police said. As the employes were cleaning up the place after closing for the night, a suspect went in and with a 22 caliber gun asked the employes to go into a large refrigerator, the police spokesman said. When they got inside, he shot them, and while coming back out again, shot a security guard.

It was the security guard who said. A police spokesman said the gunman was known to his victims and was apparently a former security guard. Police said they knew of no motive for the shootings, but speculated they could have been a vengeance killings. The gunman had been seen wandering around the popular Ben Ash Delicatessen-Restaurant in the new Plaza Cote des was being shot at. The wounded guard, blood streaming down his neck, was found slumped over when police emergency units arrived.

He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition but police said he was expected to recover. Police, wearing bulletproof vests and carrying submachine guns, surrounded the Ben Ash believed to be a one-time security officer walked into a delicatessen early Sunday, ordered four employe? into a walk-in freezer, shot them to death, and then covered their bodies with produce. He also wounded a guard. Montreal police said they picked up a suspect several hours later in the slayings of the four men. He was being held on a- coroners warrant, had already fled the scene.

When police officers opened the walk-in freezer in the delicatessen, they found four bodies under a stack of produce. One of the victims still was alive, but he died at 10 a.m. Police said the delicatesseji had closed for the night at 1 a.m. after Montreals St. Jeah Baptiste Day celebrations in honor of Quebecs patron saint.

In that period of time, through the concentrated, effort of the hospital board of directors, the medical staff, and the Chamber of Commerce, seven new medical doctors have begun practice in Caribou, and two more are due here this summer. Even so, Cary Memorial Hospital administrator Clayton Harrington admits we dont have that many more than were practicing in the city years ago. While the new doctors have come, others have gone into retirement.

This is the dilema facing many Maine communities. Many health-related people say they need additional physicians now; others look at the ages of existing physicians and are con. cerned about replacing them in the future. Few, if any, have had the influx of new doctors that Caribou has had. Since 1956, we recognized that the problem is not just the number of doctors, but the age of the physicians, says Dr, Daniel Hanley of Brunswick executive of the Maine Medical Association.

Dr. Hanley points out that the MMA has attacked the problem with a three-pronged approach: recruitment of young people to medical schools, jinancial aid for medical education, and as sistance in doctor placement. Most any community In Maine can use more physicians, Dr. Hanley notes, and the MMA has established iriority list of 58 communities laving trimmed it from an original list of 96. The MMA has a $27,000 fund which is distributed among 40 students from Maine who are attending medical schools.

When the aid and recruitment program began, there were 55 or 56 Maine students medical training; now there are 100 under the MMA program, Hanley Despite this increase, the needed supply of physicians is not being met by current trends.
