As the employes were cleaning up the place after closing for the night, a suspect went in and with a 22 caliber gun asked the employes to go into a large refrigerator, the police spokesman said. When they got inside, he shot them, and while coming back out again, shot a security guard.

It was the security guard who said. A police spokesman said the gunman was known to his victims and was apparently a former security guard. Police said they knew of no motive for the shootings, but speculated they could have been a vengeance killings. The gunman had been seen wandering around the popular Ben Ash Delicatessen-Restaurant in the new Plaza Cote des was being shot at. The wounded guard, blood streaming down his neck, was found slumped over when police emergency units arrived.

He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition but police said he was expected to recover. SEALT GOLDEN GUARD specially tempered Dura-Flex innerspring steel coils for firmness you want many Maine communities wish they had more physicians available to them and in the midst of a recognized national doctor shortage this northern Maine city has established a healthy record of attracting phy sicians in the past three years. In that period of time, through the concentrated, effort of the hospital board of directors, the medical staff, and the Chamber of Commerce, seven new medical doctors have begun practice in Caribou, and two more are due here this summer. Even so, Cary Memorial Hospital administrator Clayton Harrington admits we dont have that many more than were practicing in the city years ago. While the new doctors have come, others have gone into retirement.

This is the dilema facing many Maine communities. Many health-related people say they need additional physicians now; others look at the ages of existing physicians and are con. cerned about replacing them in the future. Few, if any, have had the influx of new doctors that Caribou has had. Since 1956, we recognized that the problem is not just the number of doctors, but the age of the physicians, says Dr, Daniel Hanley of Brunswick executive of the Maine Medical Association.

Dr. Hanley points out that the MMA has attacked the problem with a three-pronged approach: recruitment of young people to medical schools, jinancial aid for medical education, and as sistance in doctor placement. Most any community In Maine can use more physicians, Dr. Hanley notes, and the MMA has established iriority list of 58 communities laving trimmed it from an original list of 96. The MMA has a $27,000 fund which is distributed among 40 students from Maine who are attending medical schools.

When the aid and recruitment program began, there were 55 or 56 Maine students medical training; now there are 100 under the MMA program, Hanley Despite this increase, the needed supply of physicians is not being met by current trends. The number of open ings is far greater than the number (of doctors) we have, Hanley comments. These bedding pieces feature the same firm innerspring found at $10.00 to $20.00 more! The temporary bypass will be on the west side, but no traffic is to be diverted until spring. A feature of the project is that vehicles on the bridge (30 feet higher than the present one) wont lose sight of cars on Main Street. Eight-hundred-foot approaches are to be on the south end and 44 on the north. Curb-to-curb distance will be 28 feet, with one sidewalk. The new bridge will be 55 feet above the bed of the north branch of the Meduxnekeag River.

Other facts: Only two families on either end must be moved; there will be three spans; and the present bridge Is 54 years old and was widened In 1932. Had an interesting chat two days before the primary with Abbott Otto Greene of Columbia, who was seeking Bill Hathaways seat in Congress. I learned he Is no stranger to the county, having served as a captain at Loring from 1962 to 1964, when he lived at Parkhurst Siding. Was glad to find Abbotts not really an orthodox Republican, as he worked for Ed Muskie in 1954 and speaks very highly of Hathaway. A flier since 1956, he figures hes spent at least 9,000 hours (4,500,000 miles) in the air, is paid about $39,000 as a pilot for TWA, and works only ten days a month.

If in Congress, his salary would be but $3,500 a year more. Win or lose on the 19th, he said, Guess Ill stick around politics the rest of my life. Appropriately, Abbott and his wife were driving a bright green car.
