DAUGHTER'S ROOM — Carole has this light earner bedroom. really get going in the garden, so for the nest tiiree or four weeks in this column I'll provide a check list of tips to help your gardening. You may wish to dip these columns and tack them up for reference: —Inadequate soil preparation is the greatest single cause of garden failure. All southland soils, from sand to the heaviest adobe clay, need the same thing — humus — and lots ofj it. Humus, such as barnyard manure, wood shavings, straw, peat or leaf mold, should be spread over the surface in large quantities and througblyj mixed in the top six inches of soiL Add commercial fertilizer, two or three pounds per hund dred square feet. Soil prepared thus is sure to grow better lawns, flowers and ground covers. —Favorite annual Oowers available now are asters, begonias, plumed cockscomb, coleus, marigolds, petunias, salvia, verbena and zinnia. All these come in spectacular new disease-resistent varieties. —Vegetable plants for planting now are tomato, pepper, eggplant and all cabbage type plants. —These flowers and vegetables may be planted in soil prepared as outlined. They require no special care other than regular watering if it doesn't rain. —Don't over water vegetable plants. They will tell you when they want water by wilting] slightly. —Keep all faded flowers trimmed from plants. This makes a neater garden, but more important, it assures continuation of bloom by preventing plants from going to seed. —To install shrubs and trees, be sure to place the plants on a solid foundation so they can't settle. I recommend the "pedestal" or "douglmut mold' method of planting canned or balled nursery stock. To do this, dig the hol^ only as deep as the root balL Then dig around the outside leaving a pedestal of solid earth as a foundation for the plant When ready for planting, the hole will look like a mold for a giant doughnut. Place the plant on the pedestal and fill around it with the appropriate soil mix. —Nearly all plants will bene fit from mulching. Mulch is any substance such as unde- cayed leaves, and pine needles, barnyard or horse manure, straw, wood shavings, ornamental gravel or crushed volcanic cinders, spread over the ground around plants to protect the roots from heat and cold, to conserve moisture and to control weeds. Mulch should be from one inch deep with volcanic cinders and gravel to four or five inches deep with wood shavings.
