These prices do not Include freight from Detroit In the last decade the automobile has become a great factor in the pleasures of the American people The different speeds appeal to different temperaments the joy rider get enough speed out of a powerful gasoline motor and the matron finds pleasure in the noiseless electric gliding over the city streets man who does not own a car gets the real enjoyment out of his occasional ride but it is seldom that he is Invited to take sIn in a gravel pit The writer was credulous when Burke 'of the Buckeye Manufacturing Company of Anderson Ind makers of the Lambert friction drive car invited him to take such a ride Taking a five passenger torpedo model off the floor the start was made for the gravel pit after skid chains had been ob tained and as a slight diversion on the way over the driver quickly turned the car and drove it down into the ditch at the side of the reaJand up the grade and across a pair of railroad tracks whleh parallel the highway Not being ac customed to slli stunts it looked as it the car might soon be a mass of wreck age at the bottom of the ditch when the start was made but it kept right on and climbed the opposite grade The driver stopped the motor on the tracks with the front tires resting against the rails and then calmly threw on the power and pulled the car across the track and poked Its nose down another grade through a small stream of water and up another grade to the road winding lntothe gravel Pit The trip was full of surprises and the first one in the pit was when the driver made straight for a steep bank and went right up and over it without a stop when owing to the fact that the grade was better than 1 50 per cent the writer felt at times that the best place would be on level ground the short climb seemed the car had the appear ance of being ready to turn turtle PRESIDENT DRIVES CAR The president of the company assured the occupants of the car (there were five in addition to the president who acted as driver) that the testers were not as careful In driving and that If it was not thrilling enough he would be glad to let any one who desired ride with a tester The gravel pit is about a qaur ter of a mile In diameter and for half Ian hour the car scurried around the pit twisting suddenly and climbing to the top and then in a moment the car would be headed again for the depths of the Pit One of the more skeptical passengers suggested that it would be impossible to take the car up one of the climbs (and he aid not hesitate to pick outTa steep one) stop it near the top go on over and then back down the grade The driver acquiesced and the climb began Near the top the car was stopped and held for a full minute then the power was once more applied and the motor gulled the car over the crest of the hill Here the "doubting decided to jet out of the car as it was not what he lad expected The remaining passengers stuck to the car and the backward trie was made in safety i As the party left the pit the had another scare when thedriver point ed a car up a grade of about 65 per centbut halted after the front wheels had Although the holding' up of the na tional circuit proposition makes the dates for automobile racing track meets rather uncertain the road racing section of the A A calendar is taking form Plans have been completed for the holding of the national stock chassis meeting' Again It will be staged at Elgin Ill Alsoit will take two days Aug 25 and 26 The Elgin Road Race Association and the Chicago Motor Club report that they have had the American Automobile Associa assurance to this effect Already plans are under way for the racaj At a recent joint meeting of the two middle West organizations the con test was discussed thoroughly 'Three 'races will be strung over the two days The course that was used so successfully last year will again be chosen In fact the promoters have progressed so far with their plans that they are in a position to announce a change in the starting time of the races and a possible betterment of It effectlve though On August 25 the Illinois Kane Coun events will be run while the big events for the Elgin National Trophy for cars under 600 cubic inches displacement will be held the fol owlng day over a 300 mile course or thirty four laps of the circuit waa decided at the meeting that the course for the coming races shall be closed at twenty minutes before the Btart which will take place at 11 o'clock this year Instead of 10 as wasthe case in 1910 With a later start plenty of time will be afforded the spectators to reach the vantage point within the inclosure as no one will be allowed to cross the path of i the cars after the first 'machine is under An effort will be made to secure ederal troops to patrol the course Last year the Illinois national guard did well but the promoters figure that the regu lars would be an Innovation and would be better suited to the work AIRMOUNT PARK EVENT a far cry to next autumn but the Quaker City Motor Club is already plan ning for the automobile road classic held annually in Philadelphia The airmount i Park Commission has granted the permission to hold the contest on October This sanction assures what has come to be one of the most picturesque auto mobile races in this country The permit is to hold a 200 mile race The course used for the last three years will again be selected No reference was made at the meeting of the commission to the plan recently broached that the park race be made a date in the Grand Circuit of auto racing plans for the for mation of which are now under way Philadelphia says that it is most unlikely that the race will be merely an incident in the circuit Because of the three annual successes of the Quaker City Motor Club the mem bers of that organization feel that the road race given under their auspices has become one of 'the three big races in the country and they are not willing to allow the control of the contest to pass from their hands i In addition the division of receipts would preclude such an arrangement ifty per cent of the proceeds of the race this year will go to the Philadelphia mu nicipal Overproduction'of Auto mobiles Predicted by Several Manufacturers This Season Just the demand and sale of staple ar ticles is anlndlcatlen of prosperity or re verses a people so the demand and sale of amalLcars is a good Indication of the con dition of the automobile industry Harry Jewett president of the Paige Detroit Motor Car Company In discussing the con dition of the automobile business says: many automobile manufacturers have predicted an overproduction of cars this year we Believe that this will not be the case Last fall when many' of tne makers cut their output we laid our plans for Increased business As you know our company is only two years old and was not very well established at that time and con sequently a great many of the makers seemed to think we were too Optimistic In our attitude Succeeding events however have shown that the confidence we had In our product and our ability to sell It was well founded 1 "This of course was due to the fact that wo have a car that has practically no com petition a car with a largo amount of re serve power of low weight equipped with a variety of well designed bodies selling at a low popular price We figured that there would always be a demand for such a ear And the fact that we have secured over 200 dealers and are represented In almost every large city In the Union goes to show that our judgment is right We have in creased our manufacturing floor space 100 000 square feet We more than doubled our working force and In spite of this we are still unable to keep up with our orders The number of our sales at the New York and Chicago shows wras far beyond our expecta tions And the Increase In the orders com ing in during the last two months has forced us to twice increase our making orders We are working our factory three nights a week now and expect that It will be necessary soon to put on an extra force which will work every night In the week In order to keep up with the demands or our dealers course we realize that this is the be ginning of a selling season and that the de mand Is heavier now than it will be In cer tain months of the year Knowing however that for greater efficiency our plant must work at its full capacity the year round we have started in to develop a large export business and are already shipping a number of cars abroad We have secured very sat isfactory connections in England Germany Australia and New Zealand and have had several requests for agencies from Russia and Denmark We also are carrying on ne gotiations with a number of the South American dealers and expect before the year Is over to have very satisfactory representa tion down there We believe this field Is a good one Owing to the fact that the sea sons are exactly the opposite to those of the United mates we are particularly anxious to cultivate this field In order to keep up steady shipments throughout the winter Our line now is very complete and includes not only the roadster and coupe but two types of touring cars one with the torpedo type of body The other with removable rear seats is particularly adapted to farm and use the removal of the rear seat permitting a large amount of freight to be carried on the rear dock As I have said before we are very much pleased with the outlook at the present time and feel certain that this will be one of the big gest automobile years that
