"Lizzy" was a slave, and at age 17, helped guide this first Mormon expedition to Southern California. Once here, she made adobe bricks for the first homes. In 1857, Lizzy was given a written guarantee giving her freedom. The following year, she married Charles H. Rowan, a free black who worked at the Old Southern Hotel in San Bernardino.

They raised four children and she made certain all four attended school. Her daughter, Alice, later secured a teaching job at Casa Blanca School in Riverside, making her the first black in the United States to officially teach at an anglo public school. The Sun salutes the accomplishments of Elizabeth Flake Rowan, her family, and all other black leaders in the area in the observance of Black History Month. SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY.
