park, near the stock pens, to witness what proved to be the best ball game so far this season This game was played to decide the the body here the body was at the I graveyard ready to 1 lowered into the grave He succeeded iu get- 1 ting possession of it, took it back to town and had it embalmed and remained with it until it arrived in Mangum Saturday night It was kept all night at the home of Mr and Mrs James Brown and taken championship of the city and for to Bloomington the next morning this reason both teams worked hard in order to win the coveted title When the game was ended 'jpul scores counted, it was found tl at the Midgets had won by a score of 6 to 4 There was good field work on both sides but it was generally conceded that the Midgets had their opponents bested in nearly every department The Midgets have not lost a game this season and stand ready to play anything in their claSs The funeral, Sunday afteruoou, was the largest ever held in that vicinity The procession was a mile long Charles Barnes was 47 years old He was a painter ana had a sign writing and carriage painting shop at Snyder He had no family and no relatives at Snyder He had lived in Chicago the greater brother was out in the Panhandle He was subject to heart failure and had presentiment that he would die suddenly When he left he said he intended to dispose of his inter ests at Snyder and come to gum to live where he could be near his brother's family should any thing happen to call him off sud denly, He owned some 'property in Snyder and had 375 in his pockets when found dead the morn ing after the cyclone Mr Barnes says his brother never carried mon ey with him when at home and he is of the opinion that he had in tended to start for Mangum the next morning He was an earnest member of the Odd Fellows lodge and wore a medal that was given him by his home lodge for heroic work some years ago iu the rescue of persons from a train wreck near Chicago His features were not mutilated, a blow inside where auothcr squad of men were fixing the bodies as licst they could for their last restiug place They were wrapped in cheap domestic, a very rude burial robe, but it was the best to be had, aud, considering the circumstances, the corpses were well prepared The bodies were in such bad shape that it was hard to arrange them in a very viewable state One body was completely cut in twain, another had the head completely severed and scores were with arms or legs hanging by only a small part of fiesh After the final preparations they were laid on shelves on either ide of the room ready for burial Af ter 87 bodies had thus been ar ranged, robed in their white garments and lying so quiet and still it remiuded one of the catacombs of Egypt of which we have read No one was allowed in the morgue except those working and a number of newspaper men and photographers until after the work was completed At 4 00 the anxious public was allowed to view the remains, and many heartbreaking scenes ensued One young man, who had been working in Lawton and whose people lived in Snyder, came as soon as possible to the scene of disaster, and found his father, mother, two sisters aud a brother, all the relatives he had in the world, were among the dead Another young fellow became almost hysterical on finding the body of his mother in the morgue with her head and face crushed almost beyond recognition Scenes like these were frequent, but strange to say, there was very little weeping Those who had lost relatives and friends seemed too dazed to realize, so soon after the catastrophe, what it all meant Those who were brought back from Snyder to be treated in the Mangum hospital were Mrs Gill's little daughter Eva, who was bruised about the face and an ugly wound over her right eye, and Mrs Lee, a widow, and her child Mrs Lee was bruised about the face considerably and her right arm was torn by a large splinter Her child was blown a half mile from where they were when the storm came, and the little fellow seemed to be injured internally, besides being bruised and skinned up about the face and hands Mrs Lee was a daughter of Southerland Her father and mother were both killed Mrs Gill's little daughter was visiting the Southerland's and they were all together when the storm came The three injured persons were carried to the depot on cots and as they were waiting for the train for Mangum a donation was made for the little child of Mrs Lee, and in about twenty minutes 31 70 was given to the little one Mr and Mrs Southerland formerly lived in Mangum and Mr Southerland was a member of the camp of this town and carried 2,000 insurance Dr Dan Chapman and wife, who were former Mangumites, but who have een residing in Snyder for the past year, were in the storm, but escaped injury by going in a dug-out Ol Slorai Vici lata Snyder Saturday Home lor the Homaleaa Ju received at Gentry' a fiue line of the famou quick meal ga oltne atove When in the market last night and today, removing the most grugMHiie evidence of v-'onic 8 the tornado which nearly destroyed ou wa the town Wednesday night None of the injured died during the night, some of whom have ren kept alive only by the skillful efforts of physicians and nurses working in the emergency hospital and as soon as daylight came people were at work getting ready tc perform the last rites, for the dead Three carloads of coffins arrived during the night from Oklahoma City, together with a dozen undertakers from the convention of undertakers in session there Workmen also came in on a special train furnished by the Frisco, and the work of burial was carried on with utmost dispatch Two niOre injured were discovered under some debris early in the morning, but neither was identified They were pinioned under a house beam One, a man, was delirious and the other, a boy, was unconscious Owing to the failure to keep any records at the onset there has been great difficulty in securing an accurate list of the number of dead The Associated Press representative secured the first list approaching completeness on Thursday afternoon, and but few alterations have been made The two or three bodies that have been found since have not been identified Responses of a generous nature have been made by many cities and towns in the territory, several thosand dollars worth of food and clothing having been sent in and placed in charg of the local committee for distribution Relief work has also been furnished sufficiently to meet every requirement The engineering corps, a division of the Oklahoma national guard, arrived from Lawton during the afternoon and went into camp, by direction of Gov nor Ferguson It is presumed that the mission of the company is to assist in preserving order and protecting property One of the most remarkable phases of the disaster is the great percentage of killed Twice as many persons were killed as were seriously injured and of the latter many were fatal There were remarkably few minor injuries in proportion to the dead and the killed exeeed 161 per cent of the total population of the town The number of dead, as nearly as can be ascertained is 117 Tonight there are a few unburied bodies left and interment will be completed in the morning The citizens will then turn their attention to the erection of suitable habitations for the living, many of whom are compelled to live with practically no shelter while buildings that are habitable are filled to overflowing A second appeal has been sent out by the local committee, stating that food and clothing had been received in abundance but the necessity for funds with which to build homes for the homeless is pressing It is thought that about ten or twelve of the most seriously injured will die The report that Beu Flower of Elmer was injured in- the cyclone was a mistake His home was uol destroyed either as was reported For Sai A second-hand buggy one of the best makes See Chapman at the
