T.M. m«. U.S. PH. OK QUESTION: What ix a /WHAT? * * ANSWKR: The pansy is a cultivated niL-mber of the violet family. It is grown as an annual and as a perennial. The old name of the pansy is Heartsease. It lias long been grown in the home garden because it is hardy and offers a wide diversity in color and markings. The beautiful velvet-like flower of the pansy may be purple, violet, blue, yellow, white and brown, or a mixture of those colors. Like the other violets, the pansy is a low growing plant with coarsely notched oval leaves. The flowers are larger than the other violets. Pansies are propagated by seeds, cuttings from side shoots and root divisions. They prefer a sandy soil and require plenty of water and a limited amount of sun. In order to strengthen the plants and produce large blooms, it is advisable to thin out the blossoms frequently during the summer. It is pleasant to see the quaint pansy faces smiling at the sun in the window box or garden border. 7-2 (John Robinson of Stiniiuui/i. Ci'orgui. HV//.V it prize for iliis (jiiL'stlon.
