and narcotics in South Portland by Chief of Police Gordon Grath Sunday members of the annual Parent-Teacher Association leadership conference held at the Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute voted unanimously by resolution to support a statewide action program on drugs The resolution introduced by A Weymouth president of District 9 the Bangor area called for a state-wide action program to be sponsored by the Maine Congress of Parents and Teachers The resolution was the result of great concern by member? of the leadership conference in the potential spread of the use of narcotics in Maine South experience of the past year demonstrates the need for greater study of the problem throughout the state A resolution on the mat- ter will be introduced at the annual state PTA convention at Bath in October and in the meantime several members of the board of managers will in vestigate ways of bringing the problem to the attention of parents and school officials leadership confer ence was declared one of the most successful in recent years with more than 60 participants from all sections of the state It was organized by Mrs Clayton Farrar of South Portland Old Home Week Set At Sherman SHERMAN-The 36th annual Old Home Week celebration will get under way Thursday with a street parade headed by the Patten-'Sherman School Band and the Northern Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from Miltin-ocket scheduled for 10 am AQ organizations of the town and outlying areas are invited to participate by entering floats horribles ponies and commercial vehicles Co-chairmen are Mr and Mrs Myron Mitchell with Clair assisting An Ox Pull at 1 pm Thursday will be a new attraction this year There will also be an auction at 1 pm on the grounds and a baseball game is scheduled for 2 pm at the school grounds A chicken barbecue will be served on the grounds from 4 until 6 pm Dick Curless and Ricky Cur-less also featuring Karla Thibodeau and the Fifth Gate will present a show and dance Thursday evening at the Sherman gymnasium starting at 8 pm Friday at 10 am there will be a baby parade and a pony parade A pony pull is scheduled for 1 pm A cafeteria supper will be served on the grounds at 5:30 pm Dinners will be served both days at the ehurch vestry and the Masonic Hall dining room beginning at 11:30 am Lunches will also be sold at the bandstand The Patten-Sherman School Band conducted by Music Supervisor Richard Burr will present a concert on the grounds Friday at 6:30 pm Buck orchestra will furnish music for dancing Friday evening at the gymnasium Other attractions during Old Home Week will include a flower show in the church vestry with exhibits being arranged and judged according to their various categories All are invited to enter flower arrange ments and vie teachers have been assigned to the faculty of School Administrative District 29 for the school year 1968-69 Superintendent Hamilton Giberson announced Sunday Supt Giberson said that of the 23 teachers George and Clara (Conant) Clements A life-long resident of Winter-port he was well-known as dairy and poultry farmer chick hatcher and orchardist He was active in state and local governments serving in the State Senate from 1945 to 1946 and on the Winterport School Committee for 15 years He was an organizer and first president of the Waldo County Farm Bureau and the Maine Poultry Improvement Association He had served as president of the Maine Pomological Society and was first clerk of the Union ot Maine He belonged to the IOOF the Masons Grange and West Winterport Community Club In 1933
