The great tooth paw sow writes that the players rn 'the team are on friendly terms with him.

An exchanire says concerning this matter: 1 "Van Baltren'a yersion of the Pfeffer-Ryan downtag affair, about which so much has been written, is that the stories are without foundation that the fact the matteris that Van was hit so bard that day by New York that the fielders dare not confront the balL There is no jealousy existing in the nine. Van Haltren has pitched eleven win-: sing and fiveiosing games this season.

The Tribunes will soon lead in the State League. They are so a close second. Van Haltren of Chicago thinks Hyde is the coming pitcher of this coast. Exchange. Purcell is not creating such a stir by his excellent twirling as he did a few weeks since.

i Umpire DeWitt C. Van Court of Oaklaud is making an excellent record, in the California League. When Borchers pitches Captain Anson generally puts Van Haltren in the field just for a safe guard, i The public will not stand such wooly games of ball as were played last Sunday by the clubs of the State League. I Longhran is said to be a promising young pitcher. Thusiar his work for the Greenhood and Morans has bees excellent.

Give him a fair chance to get into the National Leagme. 1 The Altas, for reasons best known te themselves, gave away the game last 1 Sunday. Probably the Sacramento people were becoming tired of witness-. Ing onesided games every Sunday. The Reliance Club, now that it has won the pennant and is champion, should not disband.

This club should keep up practice and give the public some more exhibitions of excellent playing. 'Henry StulU is the best first baseman in the State. 1 would rather hare him support me than any player I know. He is a great batter and a sure plaver. In fact he is a phenomenal." Phenomenal Hyde.

Some Personal Xtema About Oarsmen, Great and Small. i The Columbia Rowing Club, after perfecting arrangements for an annual regatta, to have been held on May 30th last, postponed the affair ior thirty days, and now the announcement is made that the regatta will be passed for this year.

There are two causes far this indefinite postponement; first, the disinclination of the members to sabject themselves to the harsh regime and diet necessary for proper training and. second, the lack of 'a spirit of rivalry, due to the fact that the club, as such, has no organizea competitor. If there were two such clubs in Oak land, doubtless interest in the annual racing events would be stimulated by the zeal for rival honors, but, under the present circumstances, the members seem content to use the club as a means of individual benefit rather than for the purpose of breaking records or securing prises. i i The new racine shells have arrived. and are declared by those competent to judge to be of excellent workmanship and design, coin tne sneus reseuaoia the one used by O'Connor in his race with Peterson, and fast time may be expected in trial races.

SPOKTSMEN AFIELD, John Jamieaoa Has net Use for Bears This Year. Deputy Sheriff John Jamieson, Dr.

Smith, Charles Loveil, and Deputy Countr Clerk Robert Edgar left two weeks ago on a trip to Mount Shasta. They went away well Tested with suffi cient ammunition to bag all the game in seven counties. Mr. Jamieson and Smith returned yesterday afternoon and report that they had a delightful trip. -Edgar and 1oyell wi'l not return for a few days.

They will attempt to reach the summit of Mount Shasta witaout a stride, a most Oifficult and dangerous feat to perform this time of year. Even with the aid of a guide the trip is quite dangerous. The best time oi year to make this trip is in beptember. Air. Jamieson reports that the small game was quite plentiful, but on the trip no oeer were capturea, aiinougn ixiveii and Egar shot at one some distance away.

One day while Jamieson was out alone he found himself in small opening surrounded' by a dnse underbrush. Feeling quite tired, be; threw his gun aoross his arm. and reclined asrainst an old stump of a tree. While thus meditating be heard the rattling of bushes, but a short distance away, and presently a black bear of good proportions made its appearance.
