pCpFt SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 23 1984 Pag 13-A losing streak increases (Staff Photo by Mike Morse) Not a very shining Knight first quarter on a 7-yard run by Glendell Miller (20 rushes for 58 yards) And about 10 minutes later the Hilltoppers were on the board again after Travis connected with Arnold Grier for a 59-yard touchdown pass It was 14-0 Western and Saban said at this point he was ready to pack up and go home Instead the Knights struck back at the 12:14 mark of the second when Thyhsen hit Robert Ector for a 23-yard touchdown pass And two minutes later the Knights shortened the points deficit with an Ed O'Brien 29-yard field goal making it 14-10 It was turn next as the freshman McKenzie hit the longest field goal of his career 47-yards with 1:06 remaining in the first half giving the Hilltoppers a 17-10 lead With' 6:29 left In the third McKenzie hit one again this time from 37-yards out to increase lead by 10 Central Florida regrouped and Thyhsen rifled a 2-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Muhart with 4:41 remaining in the third bringing the Knights within three Not to be outdone Miller capped a 53-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:48 remaining in the fourth to put the Hilltoppers on top 27-17 Here comes the Knights again though driving 70 yards in nine plays only to finish with a 1-yard touchdown run by Elgin Davis bringing Central Florida again within three points Western follow the see-saw scoring theory set forth on its next series as Travis fumbled the snap at his own 28-yard line It was recovered by Ashley and with 519 remaining the Knights scored again on an O'Brien field goal from 31-yards out tying the game at 27-27 Travis came back with final score by directing the Hilltoppers 76 yards in seven plays but then the Knights reciprocated for the final margin "I never feel comfortable until a football team comes around with some Roberts said "That takes time You grow up over night I know everybody wants us to and we want to but first we have to build up our confidence my hat is off to Central he continued "For a young football team that was a heck of a win for them Although he never scored Western's Cedric Jones led both teams in pass receptions catching nine passes for 164 yards the longest single one being 43 yards by Cedric Jones who caught performances were all for naught the closing seconds of the game GLENDELL MILLER (44) of Western Is wrenched to the turf by two Central Florida Knights during their game Saturday at Smith Stadium Despite the face-mask tactics being used Miller wasn't injured Miller rushed for 58 yards on 20 carries but the big Western gains were made UK Wildcats narrowly defeat Tnlane to keep spotless record By THOMAS ROSS Daily News Sports Editor Inconsistency is quickly becoming middle name as the Hilltoppers dropped their third game in as many outings Saturday to visiting Central Florida 35-34 before an estimated 8500 fans at Smith Stadium With the loss which came in the closing seconds of the ballgame Western has extended its consecutive losing streak to six coupled with defeats in the final three games of the 1983 season I told the football team after the said first-year coach Dave Roberts crushed went through this a couple weeks ago (when Appalachian State beat Western 17-16 in the closing minutes) and I went through it five years ago at Vanderbilt not an uncommon feeling at least to me And that feeling he said will not disappear until (he young Hilltoppers begin to mature and gain experience The green Hilltoppers looked like old war horses in the early going but much like the Appalachian and Akron (a 42-7 loss) games they rolled over soon after Central Florida which was winless coming into the ballgame but stands at 1-3 now is a Division II independent working to become a I-AA school next season and Division I too far down the road according to coach Lou Saban But for now the Knights have been billed as nothing more than mediocre until they came to Smith Stadium and met the Hilltoppers Western seemed to have the game wrapped up after Hilltopper quarterback Scott Travis a junior from Glasgow scored on a keeper from 7-yards out with 2:49 remaining in the game After Jack McKenzie's point after kick it was 34-27 Western It looked as if Roberts was going to experience his first win as the Hilltopper coach and avoid that six-game losing streak But the Knights found the snake that seems to live on the Hilltopper field and like so many times before it bit Western Because Central Florida came right back driving 70 yards in 11 plays in 207 It capped it off with quarterback Dana 21-yard toss to Ted Wilson who was camped out in the Hilltopper end zone for the score Thyhsen (18 completions on 36 attempts for 186 yards) gave the Knights the go ahead points when he hooked up with Glenn McCombs for the two-point conversion Western got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff but Travis (23 completions on 41 attempts for 321 yards) was intercepted by strong safety Curt Ashely on the first play from scrimmage The Knights let the clock run out from there win it the way we did makes it even extra said Saban a former NFL coach with the Buffalo Bills the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos view of all the problems we had today a lot of mistakes it was a remarkable comeback As much as I chew on my guys one thing seems to have gotten through and to never quit And the Knights never did despite at times looking like the Bad News Bears in football uniforms But the same could be said about the Hilltoppers who first scored with 13 13 remaining in the nine passes for 164 yards Those though as the Hilltoppers lost 35-34 In given up two touchdowns both to Indiana last week Tulane was outscored 30-3 by Mississippi State and 63-21 by Florida in
