The academy is a health profes- sions preparatory program that was created to increase the num- ber of minority and disadvan- taged students who graduate from high school and college, and pursue careers in health and medi- cine. While many of the academy graduates will be studying a medi- cine-related field in college, Kari- na Herrera is one academy gradu- ate who will pursue a different path. Herrera, who is the first in her family to attend college, will study mechanical engineering at Harvard University, beginning in the fall. Even though not planning to study medicine, Herrera said the Doctors Academy was benefi- cial to her because it exposed her to the medical field through vari- ous internships and lots of hands- on experience. She described her internship in the gastrointestinal unit at Fres- Veterans Hospital and also talked about her experiences see- ing preserved bodies.
