the No. 1 rated Islanders clipped Kearney Friday night, 71 68 for the Big 10 Conference plavoff title. Saturday night it was a handy 86 73 win over scraDov Lincoln East. Then Football News, the weekly publication out of Detroit, isn't about to be beaten by anybody else. In the current issue, they picked the top 30 college football teams for next season.

You aren't going to like this, but the Nebraska Cornhuskers wilt finish fourth in the Big Eight race next fall and barely squeeze into the nation's top twenty according to FN. The publication picks Michigan as its No. 1 team, followed gunning teams were matched Monday Grand Island opens A pretty evenly for over seven minutes before GI took a Manhattan, Kan. (AP) All five starters scored in double figures as Kansas State blasted Iowa State 97 62 Saturday night in a first round game of the Big Eight postseason tournament. Leading 46 38 at halftime, the Wildcats, who ran their winning streak to eight in a row, steadily pulled away in the second half.

They out scored the Cyclones 32 10 in the first 11 minutes to take a commanding 78 48 lead. Center Darryl Winston and Guard Mike Evans both scored 17 points to lead the way for the Wildcats, who are now 20 7 on the season and are assured of their third straight 20 victory season. The rest of the starters forwards Curtis Redding and Larry Dassie and guard Scott Langton each had 12 points. State did much of its damage at the free throw line, hitting 37 of 41 attempts for 90 per by Notre Dame, Ohio State and Pittsburgh. Oklahoma gets the highest nod for a Big Eight team at No.

The 17 1 Islanders shot a blazing 73 from the field in that quarter, compared to 52 by East. And it was Paul Trieschman doing 13 points worth of damage. East made some changes in the second quarter. A box and Four in next ten Following Maryland (No. 11) and Texas Tech comes Colorado at No.

After Georgia and Texas comes Nebraska (No. 19), with Iowa State rated 20th. FN's list is rounded out by Florida, Washington, Tennessee, Michigan rallies 5 district play at NortoiK against Saturday night's Columbus South Sioux City winner. A win means another test Tuesday. "If we're not in shape at the end of the season to play two ball games Kropp said, letting his sentence trail off with a smile.

"It's those next Kentucky bombards Alabama LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) James Lee ignited a Kentucky outburst early in the second half that sent the No. 2 ranked Wildcats to an 85 70 Southeastern Conference victory over Alabama Saturday in a regionally televised game. the points spree sent Kentucky in front by 12 points with 14:33 left in the game, and al cent to go along with an even 50 one defense put Mark Carlson on Trieschman and affectively shut the 6 4 forward off with only two points through the next two quarters. Instead it was all state returnee Jeff Finn picking up the slack with 10 second quarter points, making 16 for the half to match an equally impressive effort by East's Dick Chancellor.

Chancellor, guard Tom Verglth and 6 5 sophomore center Derek Sailors kept the Spartans from falling off the Grand Island pace through three quarters. The trio eventually totaled 57 of East's game output. East led several times in the game but finally fell off the torid Islander pace midway through the third period. After Chancellor knotted the score at 53 all, Kevin Bartlett suddenly caught fire with five straight points. East came back within one but a three point play by Finn and another three point effort early in the fourth quarter by Trieschman put Grand Island in the driver's seat for good.

The Spartan cause was all but lost when Carlson fouled out with 4:08 to play and Trieschman opened up again, ending the night with 22 points, second only to Finn's 28 for GI scoring honors. Chancellor then fouled out with 1:48 to play, going to the bench with 24 points. Vergith ended with 19, Sailors 14 and Bob Mulvaney 12 as East ended its regular season with a 10 8 mark. "I think maybe we got a little tired there at the end," coach Paul Forch said of East. "We were hoping to run a little more in the second half to try to wear them down.

But they have some very well conditioned athletes. They're an excellent ball club." East also enters district play next week with a Tuesday meeting at 8 p.m. with Lincoln Northeast in Pershing auditorium. Grand Island's game at Norfolk is slated for 6:15 p.m. Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Stanford, Missouri, LSU and per cent from the field.

Quarterback the key Bench strength peps MU ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UPI) Third rated Michigan needed last minute heroics from John Robinson, Phil Hubbard and Rickey Green Saturday to avert an upset and defeat Big Ten rival Michigan State. 69 65, in overtime. Robinson and Hubbard hit the first two buckets of the overtime period, taking superb passes from Green. Hubbard immediately came back with a steal and Green followed his missed layup to give Michigan a six point edge.

Robinson added the final touch by hitting Steve Grote all alone under the basket for another easy layup and the Spartans could do little but foul afterward in a desperate attempt to catch up. The Spartans controlled the ball through much of the first half, looking only for the easy shot, and managed to leave the floor trailing 32 25 at the halftime. In the second half, Michigan State caught up behind the hot shooting of Greg Kelser and though eight ranked Alabama cut the margin to seven at one point the Wildcats were never seriously threatened. Larry Johnson led Kentucky with 16 points while Lee added 14 and Rick Robey, Mike Phillips and Jay Shidler had 13 each. While admitting that the quarterback la just one of 11 ptavers on offense, the Football News article points out that every one of the top eight teams in the final 1976 polls had retur ning experienced signal callers.

Of last year's top twenty, only three teams started off with new quarterbacks. UCLA had lost John Sciarra, but surprised with a vastly improved Jeff Dankworth. Ohio State lost Cornelius Greene, but came up with super soph Rod Gerald, while Colorado found a fine replacement for David Williams in I Jeff Knapple. If this is an accurate barometer, FN says, then Nebraska (Vince Ferragamo), Southern Cal (Vince Evans), Georgia (Ray Goff), UCLA (Dankworth), Oklahoma State (Charlie Weatherbie), Notre Dame (Rick Slager), Florida (Jimmy 1 Fisher) and Missouri (Steve Ptsarkiewicz) all have a major problem to solve. A good schedule is a big key to earning high national honors.

This is one of the hazards of being a member of the Big Eight. Michigan needs to win just one game (Ohio State) to be assured of being the Big Ten King of the Hill.
