wf -VK, MGE SIX-A Sopulpa Oklo Herald, Sunday, September 28, 1969 Anthony Quinn In Oscar Running With Secret Of Santa Vittorio' 'Boy Named George Sue' Gains Author Fame On Stage Again HOLLYWOOD DPI Anthony Quinn has thrown his wine- stained fedora into the Oscar ring along with Duke Wayne cowboy hat for best actor of the year As Italo Bombolini, Quinn is at his peak in The Secret of Santa Vittoria As the drunken clown of ar Italian wine village of which he becomes mayor, Quinn is doleful, ebullient, stupid and perfect But he is just a single facet of one of the year best pictures Stanley Kramer, who produced and directed the film from Robert Chrichton novel it was on best seller lists for almost a year has come up with the most genuine array of Italian faces and characters captured by a camera The movie is as good or better than a month tour of Italy provinces Kramer refrained from belaboring audiences with messages in The Secret of Santa Vittoria and in process has made his most entertaining movie in 20 years as a producer From his first film, Champion to his last, Guess Who Coming to Dinner Kramer frequently has assumed the burdens of the world and unloaded them on an unsuspecting public This time he settled for raucous good fun and hit the bullseye For the most part the cast reads like an Italian telephone book Anna Magnani, Virna Lisi, Sergio Franchi, Renato Rascel, Giancarlo Ciannini, Patrizia Valturri, Eduardo Ci- annelli, Gigi Ballista and Quinto Parmeggiani The credits look like a Roman menu But each face and characterization is beautifully Italian, and Kramer has captured the rich mood of the novel along with the spirit of the people There is, moreover, no violence, nudity and only pallid sex scenes But the dialogue rated the picture an for mature audiences The earthy vulgarities add an extra dimension to the private war between the citizens of the little win town and the German invaders After its first showing in Hollywood Kramer and Quinn were a study in triumph The Secret of Santa Vittor- ia was shown to hard-core critics, producers, agents, actors and other skeptical types By the last reel the audience was applauding in unison with the musical score as Quinn danced a clumsy jig Afterward Quinn said, none of them are easy It hard work Kramer hand was bruised NEW YORK UPI -Johnny Cash tremendous success with Boy Named Sue this summer uncovered another talent of Shel Silverstein Silverstein, who gained prominence several years ago first as a cartoonist and then as a writer for Playboy magazine, wrote this humorous landlord disallows pets The result is that DeMave- who plays a forest ranger in the CBS-TV series-has made a pet of Lassie on the set I love that dog, he says fondly 1 wish I owned her She is one of the most lovable animals in the world, and afraid of nothing Plays Supporting Role DeMave, a rugged, roughhewn man, himself is fearless Any actor who willingly plays a supporting role to an animal star has courage beyond the call of greasepaint He and his wife Camille, a former model, have been married six years and live in a one-bedroom apartment in the middle of the San Fernando valley Jack has given the place a touch of individuality by building room dividers, partitions and stained glass bookcases DeMave likes his role but is discomfited by the amount of traveling he must do with the long-running series Lassie is shot almost entirely on location Various episodes have taken the dog and the cast to Alaska, Oregon, Colorado and to nearby Lakes Arrowhead and Big Bear, It means DeMave must spend as many as three months a year away from home Camille is unable to travel with him because she is a production assistant at Universal studios A native of Jersey City, DeMave son of a in June The tall, energetic writer- director-producer is staging an old friend, Three Men on a Horse, which, incidentally, he served as co-author with John Cecil Holm He directed the original Broadway version of this comedy hit 34 years ago This revival will have an original cast member He is star Sam Levene, again playing the gambler who latches onto a naive greeting card writer who knows absolutely nothing about horse racing but has a knack for picking winners The play is scheduled to return to Broadway Oct 16 for a limited engagement The venture stems from a successful tour of the summer theater circuit this year with Levene and Tom Poston heading the cast Abbott entered the picture when it was decided to bring the production to town This seems to be in line with the recent trend to revive old American comedy successes such as You Can Take It With You, The Show-Off, The Front Page, The Time of Your Life, Harvey and Beggar on Horseback The last four are due this season Abbott record is phenomenal He was co-author of 22 of the plays he directed He was producer of 35 of them and co- producer of seven He was producer-director in 30 cases He ll probably be heard from as director of a new production before the 1969-70 season is over The APA Repertory Company, which won many friends here in three Broadway seasons at the Lyceum Theater in an alliance with the Phoenix
