season, October of 1973, it will be 20 years he had the club, and that will be enough, he has confided to a few of those close to him The Dodgers will be hardpressed to find another Walt Alston, a man who has guided them to six National league pennants and four world championships and who certainly ranks as the finest manager in baseball today Fortunately for the Dodgers, they have plenty of managerial candidates among them More perhaps than any other major league club Potential Managers For starters, they ve got Frank Robinson and Maury Wills They also have Danny Ozark and Jim Gilliam in their coaching ranks along with Tom lasorda, managing for them at Albuquerque There no doubt in my mind about the ability of any of these men to manage in the majors, and when the day comes that Walt Alston tells the Dodgers he's going back to his farm in Darr- town, Ohio for good, there equally little doubt in my mind they will ask him for his recommendation as to who should succeed him Walt Alston isn the type to toss names around Monday's Results Minnesota 8 Milwaukee 1 Kan City 3 Baltimore 2 Cleveland 2 Chicago 1 Detroit 8 Texas 3 California 4 New York 3 Boston 4 Oakland 2 Wednesday's primarily because he doesn care to gloss over anyone and cause hard feelings, but I have to say when the Dodgers do ask him whom he recommend as his successor, he ll say either Maury Wills or Danny Ozark There always is that chance, of course, that one of these two men or both may be tapped for a managerial job before the end of next season One major league club I know of already is talking about Ozark as its next managerial possibility Which brings up the case of Maury Wills This is his 14th season in the majors and unquestionably his poorest one Some say he's all through as a player They cite his 117 average, the fact he has stolen only one base this season and his age, which is the same as Jack Benny's 39 Wills Thinks Otherwise Maury Wills doesn't believe he is through My statistics are very poor, he says I know that, but that because I haven played regularly When I through I ll know it I won kid anybody Certainly not myself Wills has a lot of pride He has so much, it sticks out all over him I've always earned my keep, he says, and I always will Some players will gladly sit back and draw their salaries I can do that I want to earn mine I still think I can salvage this year, if I play, and I feel I can come back and have a League Leaders By MARTIN LAOER UPI Sports Writer With Monday 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals, Baltimore now has dropped 14 of its last 18 games at home, including four- game sweep by the last place Texas Rangers over the weekend Incredibly, the Orioles still are only one game behind the front-running Detroit Tigers in the American League East The Tigers gained that edge by beating Texas, 8-3 I don know what else to do Twins routed the Milwaukee Merchants Tie, Lose A tie game and a one run loss marked weekend action of the Sapulpa Merchants in play of Tulsa's Stan Musial Baseball League Cushing handed the Merchants a 6-5 defeat Friday night at Brien Park as Sapulpa held a 2-1 lead going into the eighth inning A disputed call enabled Cushing to score tree runs for a 4-2 lead, but a single by Joe Tuttle, a triple by Rick Willis and a sacrifice fly by Ron Richardson scored two runs knotting the score at 4-4 in the ninth inning The Merchants pushed across a lone run in the top of the 10th, but Cushing struck for two runs in the bottom half of the inning for the victory A league time limit ended the Sapulpa Merchant-BillWhite Chevrolet contest in a 3-3 tie The Merchants took a one run lead, 3-2, when Jack Fox singled, went to second on a passed ball, and scored after singles by Kit Harlow and Jack Plumber Bill White Chevrolet tied the game in the bottom of the seventh scoring a runner from third on a squeeze bunt Jim Iverson and Rick Willis pitched for the Merchants and what else I can say, said Oriole Manager Earl Weaver after Lou Piniella hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to give the Royals their fourth success in six meetings with Baltimore We work extra every day major league club and he says sure, why not But he doesn't go around stumping for a manager job Neither does Frank Robinson, whom I hire in a minute if it was my big league club The old order changeth and that augurs well for men like Robinson, Wills, Lasorda, Ozark and Gilliam Perhaps it changeth not as quickly as they would like, but the fact that people like Frank Quilici, Don Zimmer, Chuck Tanner, Frank Lucchesi, Sparky Anderson and Earl Weaver were given a chance to manage in the majors means that there will be other new ones, too One day soon there also will be the first black major league manager, and after him there will be others until nobody will ever give anymore thought to a black manager than is given to a black ballplayer now That's really the way it should have been some of the television cameras and some other minor details, including the thickness of the window drapes The first of 24 games in the 250,000 world chess championship match was scheduled to begin at 5 1
