today: High 75, Low 46. Weather Elsewhere academics. I just thought I'd get through the courses I needed to graduate, then take a job working with my father at the GM plant in Fremont," said Martin. "But in my senior year I took a course in biology and that was it; I really got interested in academics." He was accepted as a "special admit" with a 2.9 high school grade point average, just slightly under the 3.0 required for regular admission. Before entering UCSC, Martin participated in a summer program designed to provide academic enrichment to minority students interested in science funded by UCSC's Crown College's Alfred P.

Sloan Foundation. "With the education I'd had in high school, I couldn't do even simple math functions, so I applied for the Sloan program and was admitted. The fall after that I went right into biology as my major and did well my freshman year. "Without the help of the Sloan program, I would have had a hard time catching up." After graduation, Martin plans to go to Boston for the Harvard Summer Program, a federally-funded project for minority students interested in medical careers. As for the future, Martin says his goal is to work delivering health care to poor communities.

"I'll probably specialize in family medicine or pediatrics. But I also want to be involved in the politics of medicine in administration so that wherever I am I'll have some say in setting policies for health care delivery and opening more community clinics to serve more people." "If it weren't for special admissions and the academic and financial support programs at UC Santa Cruz, I'd probably be working on an assembly line at the General Motors plant in Fremont right now, instead of going to Harvard Medical School next September," UCSC senior Martin Garbriel Martin reflected. Martin is one of seven Chicanos in the country who have been accepted for next fall's entering class of 120 at Harvard's Medical School, one of the top in the nation. The student praised the university's help in allowing him to overcome a poor high school education and cultural hurdles. "In high school, I received little advice or counseling; as a Chicano, I wasn't encouraged to take an interest in Emergency Loan Funds Depleted The federal Small Business Association announced this morning that it has run out of emergency loan funds.

Approximately 300 property owners in Santa Cruz County whose property suffered winter storm damage have applied for the low-interest loans after the county was declared a disaster area by the federal government. Around $3 million in storm damage had been caused by rain-swollen creeks and high surf during the storms. County Administrator George Newell told supervisors in Watsonville this morning that no money can be expected unless Congress allocates emergency funds to the SBA. "We wanted to let people know there is a delay," Newell said, "since they went through the paces of applying for the loans." County supervisors voted unanimously to urge Congress to come up with some money for the low-interest loans. Satellite photo taken at 9:15 a.m.

The defendant, Laurel Gunner Miller of Watsonville, had been out of prison less than one year when he was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Rollie Hall after a special hearing Friday. "Mr.

Miller has committed more robberies that anyone I've ever seen," said Hall before the sentencing. He noted, however, that Miller had "never hurt anyone" during the robberies. According to a probation report, Miller committed the robberies to support a $500-per-day heroin habit. His parole agent said Miller had done nothing but "commit robberies and inject heroin" since he left prison in September 1979. Miller was arrested following the holdup of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and a Pioneer Chicken business in the Watsonville area.
