KGSC is also Wilson Industry's first independent station as opposed to a network affiliate. "Channel 36 is known as a movie station, and its strong base is still going to be movies." But Evers described the station's concern with "community involvement" in its plans to restructure its daytime schedule. I'nder station manager Bill Hirshey. Evers said, "We're laying the groundwork for a news operation." There are also plans, a little farther in the future, for developing a new facility to replace KGSC's current single-story structure all covered with satellite antennas just off North First Street.

"I think there's a demand for counter-programming," Evers went on, anticipating KGSC's forthcoming changes. "There's still a demand to cover the news in Santa Clara County, and besides, competition's healthy it breeds a better product on the air." For Evers, "doing a live show is the essence of television," so it's not surprising that KGSC's kick-off for its new format comes in the form of the "Noonday'' show. Even though Evers observed that "the hardest show to do on TV is a 'talking head' (or in- By RICK CHATENEVER Sentinel Staff Writer SAN JOSE KGSC-TV isn't going to be "the Perfect 36" much longer. It will still be found on Channel 36 and there will still be plenty of movies along with the syndicated series that fill out its scheduling. But the familiar slogan suggestively promoted by San Francisco topless dancer Carol Doda in years gone by doesn't convey the image the station's new management is looking for, according to KGSC operations manager Jim Evers.

So expect to see promo spots announcing "the Summer of 36." And instead of letting the twin-peaked silicon valley-ed Doda symbolize KGSC, the station is turning to the more verbal talents of Martha Tons-ing. Tonsing's live, lively "Noonday'' talk show premiering June 16 marks the first format change for the station since it was purchased by the Detroit-based Wilson Industries last fall. In addition to investments in trucking, insurance and the Buffalo Bills football team, the Wilson group also has TV stations in Topeka, Kan. and Cadillac, San Jose is "the third market we're in," according to Evers, who relocated from Topeka to Martha Tonsing blinking camera eyes. However, South played the hand like a player who bids that sort of notrump should play the dummy, and with the aid of inept defense managed to scramble home with 12 tricks. No lead would do West any good, but his selection of the nine of spades had to be a really poor choice. The ace was played from dummy and then the 10 of clubs was led and allowed to run around to West. South wanted to keep East (the danger hand) from getting on lead to fire a diamond through the king. West led another spade.

South took dummy's jack and led a club to his king. East showed out whereupon South took the proven club finesse and ran the rest of the clubs while discarding a heart and a diamond. Somewhere along the way East shed a heart. South came to his hand with the king of hearts and ran the spades. On the last spade West was squeezed.

He had to unguard his queen-jack of hearts and dummy made the last two tricks with the ace and nine. (NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.) Martha saw her role as the show's host requiring her to "apply interviewing principles in a conversational way." The host of course must do her homework, but Martha said she liked to keep things loose. "It feels comfortable with me to let it go, doing the editing on the spot.

There's a feeling you get during an interview when you know you're locked in. But of course you also have to keep it moving you've got to have direction." If you do have a ruptured disc, your treatment will be in relation to that problem. This may be conservative therapy. The doctor may want to give you some muscle relaxants. He might find it necessary to suggest some traction. But you can be sure if he's a good doctor, he's not going to do very much without first finding out what it is that's causing the problem.

DEAR DR. LAMB The other day I was working in my yard and sweat on my brow rolled down my cheek and into my eyes before I could wipe it away. It literally blinded me. The pain was excruciating. Of course, I immediately washed my eyes out with plain cool water and the pain went away.

I take many vitamins and minerals and I was wondering if this reaction was a warning that I am overdoing it. DEAR READER No, I doubt that the pain in your eye had anything to do with your taking vitamins or minerals. More likely it was associated with the high salt content in sweat which is normal. If you put plain salt water in your eyes, you'd probably feel the same thing. Washing your eyes out with plain cool water diluted the salt and the pain disappeared.

LAMB For nearly four months now I have suffered from sciatica. This causes pain in the hip. When I stand for more than three or four minutes, the pain proceeds down the large nerve to my ankle and I hurry to sit in a straight chair until the pain subsides. Ten years ago I had it much worse and it lasted for a year when suddenly it vanished. For the first three months, I had to be in bed.

I went to different doctors but none could offer any help but pain remedies. This time I considered going to an orthopedic surgeon but a friend said that pain pills were all he suggested to him. I'm 70 and would love to get back on the golf course as I'm gaining weight from these four months of sitting Can you help? DEAR READER Yes, I can. My first advice would be to go see the orthopedic surgeon you mentioned. Sciatica is not a diagnosis.

It is merely a term used for irritation of the sciatic nerve, one of the large nerves that passes down the buttocks and leg. Pressure on this nerve can cause the complaints that you have. The most common cause of such pressure is a diseased or damaged vertebral disc. Sometimes pressure on the nerve can occur from arthritis or from anatomical varations in the spine itself. Sciatica can also be caused from inflammation of the nerves and such diverse causes as the excessive use of alcohol and even diabetes.

Clearly, you can't be properly treated without a proper diagnosis. And by that I mean knowing what is causing your sciatic pain.
