Heap's Peak Arboretum, off Highway 18 and just east of Santa's Village, in Sky Forest, affords serene views of oaks and dogwoods changing colors. The Deep Creek area near Lake Arrowhead has dogwood and cottonwood, said Jim Miller, district recreation officer at the Lake Arrowhead Ranger Station. And there are oak trees around the Strawberry Peak area. People are sure to see plenty of fall colors.

Miller said, if they follow Highway 18 from San Bernardino along the crest of the mountains all the way to Big Bear In Kuffel Canyon, just south of Lake Arrowhead, there are stands of dogwood, which turn yellow in the fall. Big leaf maple, with its bright red leaves, can be found at Mormon Srings, just west of the Crestline Bridge. Farther west, other spots for autumn viewing include Silver-wood Lake, between Lake Arrowhead and the Cajon Pass, with its oaks and sycamores, and Lytle Creek, north of Fontana, with maple and alder. In Holcomb Valley, on the north shore of the lake, there are California black oaks, which turn yellow, and golden Indigo bushes.

Oaks can also be seen in the Sugarloaf area in Big Bear, said Barbara Lee, resource assistant with the Big Bear Ranger Station. The leaves of poplar trees, around Big Bear Lake, are also starting to turn yellow, Lee said. Willow trees, which turn yellow as well, grow along stream areas and by Grout Bay, near Fawnskin. Closer to San Bernardino, look for oaks along Highway 18 between Running Springs and the Snow Valley ski area. Keller Peak Road, about two miles east of Running Springs, has plenty of oak trees, which turn a yellowish-gold color every year.

The nearby National Children's Forest is also a good spot to look for autumn colors. A self-guided nature trail at BEN H. LEWIS HALL RAINCROSS SQUARE CONVENTION CENTER Hours: 1-10 p.m., Sun. 12-6 p.m. Door Prize Free Parking Ad admits you friends $2.50 each Myth 6 Face it.

Should you buy a large half-page display ad because your competitor does? Here's where you can work smart and save valuable advertising dollars. Some people confuse ad size with ad content. The size is not as important as the message.

The message in a directory should be a simple one. The size of the ad, therefore, should be sufficient only to get across a quick, simple message. This is what makes effective yellow page advertising. In other print media, such as a newspaper, you buy the space you need, not what your competitor thinks you need.
