I I Damage May Exceed $200000 WLTV Tower Is Blasted By Dynamite The charge apparently was detonated about 1:50 am or 2 am about the time area police agencies received numerous' inquiries from Bowling Green residents who reported hearing a loud explosion The explosion which knocked the station off the air was heard by nearby neighbors of the facility who told deputy Joe Hodges they heard the noise but bother to call police The damaged tower leaning at about a 15 degree angle and bowed in the center was discovered about 7:45 am by a station qpgineer Arnold Lobb Lobb said he noticed the tower appeared to be leaning as he drove toward the station but he dismissed what he first saw as distortion perhaps caused by the windshield of his station wagon The blast also shattered windows in the concrete block transmitter building which once also served as studios for the station owned by Argus Broadcasting Co Station officials this morning said the blast the transmitting equipment out of alignment and may have caused more severe damage to the electronic equipment Debris from the immediate First word of the explosion 1 brought Sheriff Christy Watts deputies Hodges and Charles Forshee State Police Detectives William Smith and Jerry Pitcock and FBI agents John Alden and James York to the scene Watts said two detonator fuses about 45 to 50 feet in length were found leading to the shattered concrete base of the tower He and other investigators theorized two detonator caps and two fuses were used make the estimated 48 sticks of explosive detonated He said of the discovery man who did this knew his dynamite!
