Nawt Staff Writer A spirited and determined Warren County team pulled off the biggest upset in the history of the school Friday night when they dumped Christian County 21-13 A 40-point underdog going into the game the Dragons with the help of the strong arm of the press played a tenacious de fensive game while the offense ground out three touchdowns An article by a young Hopkinsville sports writer apparently triggered the upset He quot ed a comment by Colonel coach Dave Holt that County was the worst team in the The quote was picked up here by the Daily News tt wc cc (Daily News Photo) WARREN Hilltoppers The btg Homecoming victory was the first here over Western in eight years Checked with 27 yards in the first half which ended with Eastern nding just a 7-6 lead Carter broke loose for 79 more yards after intermission as he won his personal duel with tfreshman sensation Dickie Moore While Carter finished with 106 yards in runs Moore posted 62 in 15 carries And Carter had been hurting so badly all week that coach Roy Kiid feared he even play Moore had yards in 11 carries including a 41 -yard touch down sprint in the first half But he was checked with a yards in 4 tries in the last hall Moor did however sot an all-time Western one-season rushing record in just his seventh varsity game He now owns 717 yards in 138 runs eclipsing the mark of 703 yards set by Gene McFadden in 1953 The game was far closer than the score indicates Both teams had 13 first downs Eastern had a 183 to 180 edge in rushing yard age And both rivals netted 120 yards in the air The biggest difference in the punting of Eastern's Fred Ma-lins He averaged a whopping 4T yards on 7 kicks Western's Jerry Matthews hit 37 yards on I boots 0 0 0 Wostom loaf two groat chances to make it a far closer game on field goal from the 21 but it was wide of the uprights Western senior comerbeck Elmer Murray played one of the finest games of his career He led the Hilltoppers with 11 individual tackles and his pass defense helped check Fred Malins the Ohio Valley SHEWS Christian Co Coach's Letter Proves Him Far Bigger Man Than Pre-Game Quotes Would Indicate The plot would stagger the imagination of an alcoholic Hollywood script writer Christian County High an incredible 70-point favorite by comparative scores and winner of 5 of games was going to play Warren County High which had won just 2 of its last 10 games Up spoke the Christian County coach Dave Holt to a young Hopkinsville sports writer: (Warren County) are the worst team in the our second-string backfield will mur der have 323 plays and I imagine all of them will Warren County wins I will quit Comparative scores would indicate Holt indeed had nothing to worry about The Colonels had won by 38 points over Fulton County which defeated the Dragons by 32 a 70-point spread But Warren County High won by 21-13 here Friday night in what you might call the greatest upset in high school football history There is no question but that words caused the amazing result Coach Holt however emerges as a much bigger man than his printed words would picture him A day before the game was played he wrote the following letter to me: statements made by coaches should never be printed I am sure you are aware of this When I read in the Park City Daily News your reference to my remarks from our local paper I was made more aware of how this seemed to you and any other sports writers who may have read it my enthusiasm for my team and the showings which they have made this fall I let my feelings run away with my judgment when I was talking to our local reporter I did not expect to be quoted by the young reporter to whom I was talking I feel that he as well as I realize that such an article will not upgrade sports Please understand that I was not misquoted but to say that I am genuinely sorry is a very mild understatement It just does not make sense that any coach would want to injure his own reputation or hurt another school by such remarks will never understand why I was senseless enough to make such statements for I have the highest regard for Warren County High and for coach Eck Branham Any amends they would accept I amNvilling make Please Bert believe me when I say that I am wholly contrite and sincere in this I seriously question that there are many Then caught in a similar trap of their own making who would have the courage to write such a contrite and humble letter or to avoid creating some alibi for what he said After all what he although he felt it would not be is just what thousands of coaches have felt like saying He deserves some sort of award for candor from the profession Having learned a valuable lesson I hope Holt does not quit coaching as he promised He took over a sinking ship at Christian County last year and his teams have lost just 6 of 17 games He now has a phenomenal 370 boys playing junior high and high school football which surely is one of the most comprehensive programs in Kentucky Warren County High coach Eck Branham was a jubilant but forgiving winner all have no ill feeling toward coach Holt he said think he learned a big lesson in this We accept his apology and I am sure it was 1 had ever seen They were so BIGGEST WIN Certainly young though you knew they SUNDAY OCTOBER 31 1965 PAGE 10 fire when they took the field Dragon coach Eck Branham called the win greatest vie tory ever had since I began coaching in 1938 In he the greatest win I ever The happy coach said he always asks the team to play to its capacity tonight (Fri day) they have a little The statistics bear out that the difference in the game must have been desire The Colonels outgained Warren County by two yards but were penalized a whopping 96 yards Standouts for the Dragons were too numerous to mention Branham called the entire team in the upset When the Dragons fumbled a punt on the WC 42 after the defense had stopped the Colonels the stage was set for another Warren But if that young boys stay with Branham and he gets some help from the school board Warren football is going to go np steadily starting in 1967 By then if things develop as I expect there is no reason Bowling Green High and WCH should not launch their long-delayed series Sincere congratulations to Branham and his Dragons who finally are breathing some fire Now come down to earth boys and go after good old Franklin-Simpson this week likely to have fhe big for all but half a dozen teams in Region One And coach Eck Branham did it with an extremely young team The main thing is that the Dragons now have proved that they can win when comparative scores give them absolutely no chance No rviai is likely to take them lightly in the future Which will make victories come even more difficultly I thought and when saw them early in the sea- only score in the third quarter Leftridge capped a 67 yard Mountaineer drive when he scored from 12 yards out A pass or the points after was good to Bob Dunlevy The game was close at this point at 15-8 but Kentucky put it out of reach when it took over on fourth down and moved 40 yards in six plays with Norton scoring on a four-yard keeper play Although Kentucky depended heavily on its ground attack the pass-catching of Seiple and Windsor played an important role Seiple bagged five aerials for 86 yards and Windsor received five for 47 Watt Virginia 10 8 Kentucky 9 6 6 KY FG Andrighetti 20 KY Seiple 1 run (kick failed) KY Bird 3 run (pass failed) WVA Leftridge 4 run (Dun-levy pass from McCune) KY Norton 4 run (kick blocked) KY Bird 11 run (Andrighetti kick) 37500 West Virginia took the opening kickoff and easily moved the ball through the Wildcat defense Ford took the kickoff and dashed 49 yards to midfield McCune then unleashed hit heralded passing On first down he fired to Leftridge for 19 yards On the next play Ford moved to the Kentucky 14 After three short gains West Virginia had penetrated to the Kentucky eight-yard-line where they were slapped with a 15-yard penalty Three plays later the Mountaineers still not recovered from the loss and an attempted field goal from the 21 failed The only scoring in the first quarter came on a Kentucky drive that started on its own 37 But the Mountaineers dug in on their 3-yard line and John Andri-ghetti kicked a field goal for a 3-0 Kentucky lead Late in the second quarter with time running out Norton son that this team had more gest crowd in your football his-fire than any Dragon squad 1 1 tory watching you WARNING!
