SUNDAY C9 THE FRESNO BEE THE FRESNO BEE SOUTH 9 Printed 21:28 Logical Page is THE FRESNO The Fresno Bee Fresno driver Gary Scelzi is seeded fifth for first elimination round after two days of qualification runs for the NHRA FRAM-Autolite Na- tionals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, where he won his first Funny Car final. That was in 2003, just the second season after his switch To Fuel, where he won three a i ships. This year, Scelzi again chases veter- an John Force for the title and also trails rookie Robert Hight. Although earlier this season Scelzi talked confidently of making a run for the champion- ship, the 44-year-old driver has backed off a little. thing is 23 races he said, the more I talk about it the dumber I look, and not hard for me to do.

So done talking about Scelzi said his team is strong enough to take advantage of any mistakes by the front-run- ners, but it will take error-free performances the rest of the way to Pomona in November to win his first Funny Car cham- pionship. Scelzi made himself at home in the NHRA event closest to his hometown with a fast pass of 4.793 seconds at 325.14 mph. The speed was second-fastest after four rounds of qualifying, just off Del track- record 325.69. Scelzi faces No. 12 qualifier Frank Pedregon (4.937/311.49) in the first elimi- nation round.

Tony Pedregon led Funny Car qualifiers at 4.759/321.12, while Tony Schumacher was quickest among Top Fuel com- petitors (4.529/325.77); Kurt Johnson surged past his father Warren to the top of Pro Stock (6.676/206.80); and Andrew Hines led Pro Stock Motorcycle (7.021/192.47). All four division- leading qualifiers set track elapsed-time records. Fresno Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Chris Rivas stayed third after qualifications at 7.068/189.47 and will face Matt Guidera, the 14th qualifi- er at 7.165-179.04. Rivas, a 38-year-old rookie, is 11th in points and told The Bee this week no longer satisfied being outside the top 10. He won last year with Purge and in 2003 with Strong Hope. Flower Alley becomes the leading contender for next Travers Stakes now that Preakness and Belmont winner Afleet Alex is out with an injury.

Sand Springs won the $500,000 Diana Stakes on the turf, holding off Que Puntual for a victory. Hambletonian field pared Classic Photo won his fifth straight race and Vivid Photo scored an upset in the elimina- tions at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.Y., for the Hambletonian trotting race. The two $100,000 elimina- tions cut the field of 17 to 10 for the final on Aug. 6. The first five finishers in each elimina- tion advanced to the $1.5 mil- lion race, in which Classic Photo now is the early favorite.

In the $250,000 Classic Se- ries finals for older horses, Mr Muscleman won his ninth straight in the Trotting Classic; Burning Point won the Classic Distaff; Peaceful Way extended her win streak to six in the Clas- sic Oaks; and Boulder Creek captured the Pacing Classic. Del Mar Long shot Shining Energy finished one length in front of Memorette and Royal Copen- hagen, who finished in a dead heat, at the $150,000 San Clem- ente Handicap at Del Mar Race Course in Del Mar. Flower Alley races to Travers favorite role Associated Press Rookie Reed Sorenson took control with 33 laps to go and pulled away to win the Busch Series Wallace Family Tribute 250 on Saturday night in Madi- son, Ill. Mike Wallace, one of three racing brothers from the St. Louis area family, finished sec- ond at the 1.25-mile Gateway In- ternational Raceway oval.

Rusty Wallace, honored during his final year of racing before retiring, led for 17 laps in the middle of the 200-lap race be- fore crashing on lap 137 and fin- ishing 37th and Kenny Wallace was 24th. The event drew a crowd esti- mated at 60,000, largest ever at the raceway east of St. Louis. Sorenson, 19, won his second career Busch Series race after qualifying second behind Mar- tin Truex Jr. earlier Saturday and starting on the outside pole.

Mike Wallace was unable to mount a challenge after a re- start before the final three laps, with Sorenson winning by 0.71 seconds. He said he was too caught up in the emotion. come back to St. Louis, a place where always strug- gled and run well in a race named in my honor, is very Wallace said. spun the tires on the restart, I screwed up.
