The other cases were mostly suits for divorce the most notable of which was the Beach case Beach was a prominent man in New York City aud had wandered out to Oklahoma, where he supposed the divorce mills run easy Mrs Beach, however, put in an appearance for alimony at the rate of alrnut 5, KM 00 er year The court grarted the divorce but took the alimony question under advisement During Beach's short stay in the city the streelcoinmissioner concluded that II Mr Beach was a resident of Norman to secure a divorce he would also be a resident for poll tax aud consequently served notice on him to work the roads Mr Beach found this notice very con venlent during his trial but as soon as the trial was over he told the street commissioner that he guessed he would not work The street commissioner immediately had a warrant issued for his arrest and the city marshal went after him at once and arrested him The gentleman took great umbrage at this sudden turn of affairs and remonstrated but it was of no use and the city marshal marched him up before the police court On entering the court room the gentleman, from New- York, asked the Police Judge What kind of a den of thieves was this he had fallen into, whereupon the Police Judge immediately threatened to fine him 10 00 for contempt of court This rather sobered the late arrival, from New York, and he became very cour- teousand asked the court what was the fine The court immediately informed him that 4 00 for poll tax and 3 20 costs, making in all 7 20 would be about the sum that would make all things serene in the police court He immediately paid it and took the next train Last Sunday evening at about six o'clock, the citizens of Oklahoma City were aroused by the firing of pistols in the heart of the city At about six o'clock and ordered the parties to surrender Casey, who was standing in the hind part of the buggy immediately turned around and shot the chief of police, who walked back a few steps and fell dying The other two policemen opened fire on Casey and shot him dead I11 the meantime Christian had brought his revolver into action and a regular battle ensued Christian jumped from the buggy and started to run down
