Ten THE TIMES-ARGUS BARRE-MONTPELIER VT FRIDAY OCTOBER 6 1961 Corporations Tap Investment Fund Market Tuesday Is Donation Day For Mayo Memorial Hosp By SAM DAWSON AP Business News Analyst NEW YORK (AP) -Corporations have been tapping the investment fund market at a fast pace this year Bank loans picked up but the new security market has been busy Governments have been borrowing heavily too The federal government has needed new cash to meet growing bills State and local governments have been issuing tax exempt securities at a great rate Only consumer borrowing for big ticket items or for housing has been trudging along far more sedately than the business recovery might suggest panies retained $9 billion of their net income and also had avail-1 able $23 billion from an increased flow of depreciation allowances This total of $32 billion available for operations or new plant and equipment helped corporations get along without borrowing 1 so much from banks or from the long-term investment market This availability of cash for corporate use continued marked through the first half of the year Bankers think this is a major reason that bank loans to business picked up along with the rise in industrial output Investors have' been partial to bond rather than stock issues because bond yields have been rising while stock prices have gone up faster than dividend payments making for lower yields on stocks in general At the same time been issuing long term bonds corporations have been putting more of their idle cash to work in the short term security markets where interest rates have been relatively high In past ydtrs a savings of about $300 in the food budget has been effected by this project The contributions may be taken directly to the rear basement of the hospital at any time during the day or to the Municipal Building Tuesday when auxiliary members will be packaging the foods to take to the hospital Or they may be given to the canvassers on that day Contributors who will not be at home are requested to leave donations in a bag on the porch and clearly labelled for the hospital Mrs William Mayo chairman of the project will appreciate help Tuesday at the Municipal Building NORTHF1ELD During October the Women's Auxil i a of Mayo Memorial Hospital sponsors Donation Day It is an annual opportunity for residents to share the food surpluses and is in no way intended as a financial drive This year Donation Day will be Tuesday The local high school students will make a house to house canvass for contributions of canned frozen or non-perishable garden produce Fresh fruits and vegetables are also acceptable as well as home canned or frozen foods commercially canned goods and food staples Apples are also desired The school children in the district always participate in this project by taking a jar of food vegetables or packaged goods to fill a box at school Fairlee AUTUMN UYERS ONANZA Craftsbury And Hardwick Form District Band HARDWICK Donald Le-Grow music director of Hardwick Academy is organizing a program for the 1961-1962 year The band has grown considerably this past year starting with 17 and climbing to 40 LeGrow feels that at this rapid rate of growth HA should be able to boast of a band of 80 members with the hopes of organizing a second band for the elementary grades With the help of the Parent-Teachers Association the music department has secured uniforms for the band In a bright gold color the trousers and jacket are trimmed in purple with hard hats to match A District Band has also been formed This band is composed of Hardwick and Craftsbury The purpose is to give the students the opportunity of playing in a large group and adding strength in various sections of the band This organization will meet twice a month alternating rehearsals between both towns Whenever a performance is held both bands will play as a single unit such as at both Christmas concerts this year Part of the rush of corporations and government agencies to float new issues of bonds and stocks has been due to the relatively low level of interest rates This has been an administration objective But it also has been due to a fairly flush supply of investment funds thanks to increased savings plus the slack demand from consumers and from business for bank loans And part of the rush to float securities since March when the recession was floored for the count has been due to the expectation that the business recovery will step up total demand for borrowing to the point that interest rates must rise whether the money managers approve or not Most of the corporate borrowing has been in recent months but Federal Reserve Board figures for the first half of 1961 put the total of new issues at $65 billion This was significantly more than in 1960 when business was pulling in its horns Also business last year was able to a large degree to live off its own fat That is off funds it engendered itself The First National City Bank of New York notes that in 1960 corporations garnered some $68 billion in cash The bank economists say that $22 billion of this went for taxes on income and profits and $14 billion for dividends But the com- Kiwanis Members Review Hardwick Key Club Work HARDWICK Eleven m-bers of the Hardwick Academy Key Club were guests of the Kiwanis dinner meeting at Ray and Lucy's Restaurant
