Dirks vanished after going alone to investigate a boating accident on the Blue River Reservoir 40 miles east of Eugene. Searchers found his body hidden under some tree boughs. He had been shot in the head. Brooks' van was discovered nearby. Brooks, 31, was detained for questioning April 18 and was charged with murder the next day.

Authorities later picked up the 18 women and six children of Brooks' "family." The children have been placed in foster homos. Brooks, bom and raised in Austin, said he calls himself Snake "because you never know what a snake is going to do." He said he and Jeanne Gil-more, owmtf of arts and crafts shops in the Log Angeles area, founded the communal group in 1968 to give young people a chance to stay out of trouble. Brooks said the original group included two former Catholic nuns, a teacher and a doctor. The family came to the Eugene area in 1972 and built a log cabin in the Lorane Valley southwest of Eugene. "We're going to make every effort to go even if the South Vietnamese don't give us permission to go," said Bart S. Bonner, executive director of the organiza tion, which espouses strong anti-Communist sentiments. The South Vietnamese Embassy here has said its government has a policy against permitting aliens in its army. Bonner said at a news conference that if unable to land in South Vietnam, "many of our personnel are qualified to jump." Bonner, a 34-year-old former Marine, formed what he calls the VW April 10 in Washington. He says the group has a strength of 100 men at this time, with offers from others throughout th? country.

The VW is working out of a donated house in southeast Washington, the walls of which arc papered with letters and telegrams with offers to volunteer from a number of ex-servicemen, including one 43-year-old who said he last fought in Korea.
