THE SUN May 16, 1982 -C-5 "A religious look at life after death med witlhiyt worry. SEVENTH DAY AD-VENTIST Adventists believe death is sleep. The soul is not immortal; it dies and goes into the grave. At the final judgment, all the dead an immortal soul created at conception. At death, a person either goes into the presence of God or to a place apart from him.

Catholic doctrine still teaches the existence of a place of purgation from which a person can eventually go to be with God. The church also teaches a final Judgment. World to await the resurrection of the dead. At the resurrection, all souls receive perfected bodies and are judged according to their works. Those in Christ live on In the presence of God; those outside live on in torment.

Jews do believe in the immortality of the soul, in the sense that people die and leave memories behind them.

More traditional Jews, however, do maintain prayers in hopes of a resurrection of the dead. NEW THOUGHT There are three major New Thought denominations: Religious Science, Divine Science and Unity, these churches teach that life simply continues on another plane of existence. People leave their bodies but do not lose their identities. CHRISTIANITY Christians all teach some form of life after death: life with God for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ; life apart from God for those who have not. Different Christian churches and denominations, however, do not agree on the exact nature of life after death.

Here are a few of their LUTHERAN Death is not sleep. At death, the body decays and the soul goes either to be with God or to be in a place apart from him. When Christ returns to earth, he will unite the dead bodies and souls. Those in Christ will be with God; those not will be apart from him. Christ and his resurrection is the prototype for what the new life is to be.

MORMON All souls, comprised of spirit and body, live forever. At death the spirit goes to a place called the Spirit By ROBERTA GREEN I Sun Staff Writer What happens when we die? People have been asking that question almost since time began. For thousands of years, people have looked to religion for their answers. Dr. Nathan Schnaper, psychiatrist at the University of Maryland, said that although he doesn't believe in life after death, people who do are among the few who die with dignity.

"The only dignified deaths I've seen are the tired old people or cancer patients who feel this is enough or those who are truly religious and want to go home again back to the arms of Jesus," he said. To give some idea of the comfort people find in faith, here is a summary of what the world's great religions, along with a number, of different Christian groups, teach about the nature of life after death. BAHA1 Baha'is teach that there is a life after death, but not in the physical form as we know it, however. The afterlife is strictly spiritual, and life on earth is a time to develop one's spiritual being. BUDDHISM The Buddha taught that there is no ultimate reality in things or in human beings.

In short, human beings have no immortal soul. To get beyond this changing and temporary life, human beings go through a series of births and deaths. The cycle ends when a person, by following Buddha's eightfold path, reaches enlightenment or Nirvana. That principle lives in all living beings. However, because of attachments to things of the earth, human beings go through a series of deaths and rebirths. The process itself is cyclic, going on forever. The only way out of it is to realize that the core of one's personality is Brahman, and that earthly attachments only keep one from eternal peace. ISLAM Allah is the one God, creator of the universe and everything in it, including human beings.

Humankind becomes separated from God through pride, which says human beings are equal to God. Each soul is immortal, and at the final judgment the dead will be resurrected and judged according to their individual deeds.
