Stocks Confused Holiday Nears New York, Dec. 23. stock market displayed recovery (P)- -The elements today but not in sufficient amount to touch off any real switch of the downward trend. While a number of favorites were lifted fractions to a point or so, declines of as much were plentiful and the direction the close still was a bit indefinite." The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was unchanged at 35.5 after a drop of .5 in the preceding session to a new bottom since April 1, 1938. Tax selling persisted on a large scale although, with only six more sessions available for this sort of liquidation, the opinion was heard that it should dry up from now to the end of the year.

At that, there was enough of it today to ut the turnover at 1,417,422 shares compared with 1,459,065 yesterday.
