Around Vermont Kidnap Follows Break-Up BURLINGTON (UPI) A law enforcement student accused of assaulting and kidnapping his girlfriend's parents apparently was distraught over the woman's decision to end their relationship, police said.

Lennie Bushey, 18, of Colchester pleaded Innocent Friday in Vermont District Court to aggravated assault and kidnapping. He was held for lack of $10,000 bail. On New Years night, Bushey allegedly held Colchester School Board Chairman Robert Campbell and his wife Mary Jane at gunpoint for several hours, then forced them to drive to a home where he thought their daughter would be found. The Campbells were not seriously harmed. The Lord was with us, Campbell said after the ordeal.

Authorities said Bushey, a student at Champlain College, apparently was distraught that Holly Campbell, 19, broke up with him. Bushey borrowed a pistol and drove to the girl's Colchester home, according to police. She was not there. Police said Bushey then herded the girls parents into the kitchen at gunpoint. Another daughter, Robin, 21, escaped and called police.

They surrounded the house but were afraid to rush in for fear Bushey would hurt the Campbells. At one point during the siege, Campbell tried to grab the weapon, but Bushey held on tight and fired three shots, authorities said. All the bullets missed Campbell. Finally, Bushey allegedly forced the couple into their car, telling them to drive to a second home in search of their daughter.
